Harry Potter books were a lot better before Voldemort was "revived". The first four were these "yearly", relatively self-contained adventures that built this magical world, consistent in its inconsistency, with the looming dread of Voldemort possibly coming back.

Then at the end of GoF, Voldemort is restored to power and the stories just arent as fun. Dumbledore's Karate Class, Snape's Old Nickname, and The Deathly Doesnt Matters just werent as interesting as immortality stones, secret dungeons, inescapable prisons, and world tournaments.

Imo she should have established horcruxes in 5. Have Voldemort revived at the end of 6, and make book 7 the bombastic finale. All while continuing to give each book its own personal mythology. Rather than drag "Voldemorts alive and nobody wants to do anything" out for three books and spend half the last book camping and brooding.

Also notice how after GoF all the scholastic book covers turned to suck.

We went from these amazing collages of all the different story pieces to these single-colored whispy, mysterious pictures that felt really generic.

That's the point. Moldybort's revival marked the turning of the series into a dark and moribund story, because there's nothing fun about him.

It grew with the audience and tackled issues that were important to that world. It is impressive for a YA series honestly.

Which i could forgive if Volemort was interesting. But he's not. The most interesting part about Voldemort was his followers. And he doesnt need to be alive or at full power to have them do things.

I found the social commentary and move to more serious widespread issues to be really intriguing. I kinda want some novels on how it was for the original Order. Sounds like it was way worse in some regards.

I agree. 6 and 7 weren't even good books. She seems incapable of writing...war and other darker stories. So changing what she's writing would help.

It's also reflective of the cast of characters growing up and understanding the world through the prism of a person more socially conscious of their surroundings. Even in the earlier pre-teen books, there were rumblings of a darkly sinister underbelly to the Wizarding world, even if it was all magical wonderment. The kids grew up before our eyes, and shit gets much less magical when you go from dreaming about playing in the freshly fallen snow, to thinking about having to turn in a report to your teacher by Thursday. Growing older sucks; the books reflects this.
