Overall, I still think it was great. I think they improved on most every mechanic the originals did, gave us tons of fanservice, and gave us slick level design.

Buuuut, imo the best designed elements were all derivative of previous Sonic gimmicks and levels. The original levels felt weaker by comparison. Egg Emporer was just an annoying, bland final level and the final boss was almost as anti-climactic as Sonic CDs. I did like Studiopolis, and Press Garden was beautiful, though.

And they also suffer at times from just being too long. I dont want to spend 6 minutes clearing one act of Lava Reef. >_>

Though I do appreciate the balls it took to jam Oil Ocean in there. Probably wasnt a popular choice and it ended up being surprisingly fun.

Oh, and the music was just ok imo. Not bad, but disappointing given the series track record.

8/10 game. Amazing, worth every penny, but I cant rank it above the classics it pays tribute to.

I feel that. Entire segments of zones were stripped right out of the Genesis games, and I feel a little annoyed upon realizing that.

Still, a hell of a lot of fun.

the original levels are pretty great and the returning levels are all superior versions except for mayyyyyybe hydrocity 1
i can't imagine spending six minutes on lava reef

from level design alone it's the best game in the series

It was a return to form for Sonic but I can see why some people would say they played it a bit too safe. Id be excited if they let the team make another with more original levels.
