With Justice League hitting theaters this weekend and Thor: Ragnarok having debuted two weeks ago, this is the closest Warner Bros. and Marvel Studioshas come to directly competing with one another to dominate the box office. While it's clear that Justice League will take the top spot, sources says that Warner Bros. is nervous that if the film doesn't top Thor's opening weekend, it could be the beginning of the end for the DC Extended Universe.

"If a B character from Marvel shut downs and outperforms the A team from DC, thats an embarrassment," a Justice League source The Hollywood Reporter."Its going to be a stressful weekend for some [Warners] execs."

I doubt they care that much. Despite it most likely being shit it will still make money, see BvS and Suicide Squad.

Just because it might make less doesn't mean it still won't be wildly profitable. It'll likely profit from foreign markets alone.

Just because it might make less doesn't mean it still won't be wildly profitable. It'll likely profit from foreign markets alone.

Movies making less than their predecessors is a worrying trend for these big companies.

Taking the top spot for your opening weekend when your only real competition has been out for at least a week isn't overly impressive. It's currently on track to not even beat Thor's opening weekend numbers. Not Avengers or even Avengers-lite, just Thor.

Well, potentially more profit. JL looks shitty so it's going to get a low opening weekend. Meanwhile, Thor Ragnarok looked great and people enjoyed it. It will have longer legs and probably end up making more than JL.

Think about it. Thor beat the Justice League.

the incentive is that positive reception from audiences leads to word of mouth recommendations which help with sales

Currently the movie is not hitting expected figures. If it doesn't crack a billion like Marvel does then it is not worth DC's investment.

It's entirely on them. Thor 1 and 2 didn't light up the box office. Ragnarok did because it had great marketing, great reviews, and great word or mouth. If they made a movie that got people excited they would have crushed it, but they kept Snyder on after 2 failures.

You definitely should! I absolutely loved it. While there were some flaws (like them making some jokes during some serious scenes, which kind of kills the mood), all movies have them, and I think the positives outweigh the negatives.
And they give the Hulk some actual character beyond ARGH SMASH. People debate on whether it was a good idea, but Im on the side that it was!

CE insists all the time that popularity has no correlation with quality.....until a movie they like does well. And then they revert when a movie they like fails. And then they flip again when a movie they hate flops. And then back again when a movie they hate succeeds.

I think people are just happy that a quality movie with a less know hero is doing better than a shitty one in a shitty shared universe that has a bunch of icons.

I havent seen either one yet.

If I was to go to the theater Id watch Thor over JL.
