It seems like a dying genre. I actually have a hankering for something between Call of Duty and Battlefield (maybe more towards the arcadey side), but no one is playing any sort of games like that.
And I'm not shelling out money for the new CoD but the beta did give me a taste of something I wanna play again :\

Those games aren't popular on PC. They're playing stuff like PUBG, Overwatch, Counter-Strike, Team Fortress 2 etc. Stuff that's on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Destiny 2 sounds like it's doing okay on PC.

Yeah, I just wish they'd make cheaper games on the more "down to earth" side of gaming :(. I mean PUBG is pretty good for realism but it's tooooo slow.

EDIT: I've played a lot of Counter-Strike over the years. It's a good fall-back title, but I was hoping for something a little more modern, with ADS and hit markers and whatnot.

I feel like there are a few indie multiplayer FPS games that sound pretty good that have a decent userbase. I don't want to recommend them because I haven't bothered playing any of them.

But I've definitely seen a few military sorta ones.

Yes. D2's PvP isn't the best by any stretch of the imagination. It is somewhat reminiscent of older halo, but only in a deja vu sense. A lot of people really criticize D2's PvP.

In terms of the rest of the game, I probably put in about 100 hours getting the three classes to max light level and completing the raid + end game PvP (Trials of the Nine). I thought it was well worth the buy, but there is more salt in the D2 boards here than all of the Earth's oceans.

edit: this is console version by the way, but I imagine the PC version is solid.

It peaks between 23-24k daily but I'm on the east coast and the number starts dropping by like 1.5k per hour starting at 4 PM it feels like. Also a lot of the servers I see for game modes that are what I'd wanna play (TDM, War Pigeons for example) are either full constantly in the US (meaning I'd have to sit in a queue for up to 20 minutes) or are in Europe (have to hope the ping isn't above 110).

Lots of people do Conquest and vanilla Operations though!

As far as other FPS games go, I just tried out Black Squad which felt sort of like Call of Duty meets Counter-Strike but... the framerate was so friggin' bad and honestly the interface was kinda weird and it wasn't really rewarding so I got rid of it. Gonna try out this Warface game now >_>.

But honestly TC, if arcade twitch shooters are your thing, you should probably consider playing them on console.

Like I get that a keyboard and mouse is technically better for aiming, but for some reason or another the relative communities don't really compare.

If I had a PS4 or an X1 I would literally probably buy the new call of duty game despite hating the beta on PC. That's kind of how desperate I am.

I mean... if I just wanted a singleplayer game I'd... have a lot more options and wouldn't really care if people are playing FPS on PC or not. Also, Battlefield and CoD are traditionally multiplayer games.

I booted up Warface, it opened a launcher which downloaded a patch, and then when I tried to play the game it told me "Mail.Ru anti-cheat installer needs to run". Nope I'm good thanks.

As someone who played cods on Pc. Good luck finding players for any cod games that aren't the latest one.

I got tired of trying to play the same one only to get matched in the same TDM lobby every night with the same people

Did you read the OP? Also Overwatch is nothing like CS GO or Battlefield. Not saying that's a good or a bad thing, just an observation that it's not what I'm looking for.

Eh that's how I've always felt about it. Big maps, vehicles, weapon variety, etc like BF, but overall arcade-y feel that's less realistic than BF. And you can go popping headshots like crazy, something that's harder in BF but even easier in CoD.

I loved Bad Company 2 but I don't think it has an active player base any more. Well, 500 on Steam alone so maybe it's still got some.

R6 Siege doesn't have deathmatch modes or anything does it? Mostly just objective-driven single-life game modes a la classic Counter-Strike? I don't have anything against those types of modes, but I would like the option to be able to just go on kill rampages if I get bored of trying to save people from houses.

Have you tried FORTNITE? It is a more arcade version of PUBG.

Also Quake Champions should be coming out sometime next year I'm guessing.

Everyone one on PC is playing (FPS wise) one of the following games:

Counter-Strike (99% Source or GO. Only a few die-hards still playing 1.6)
TF2
Overwatch
Paladins

Those are your options for multiplayer games

I assume Quake Champions will take off when it comes out fully but we'll see.

The Quake Champions devs wanted a slice of that Overwatch pie so they tried to make every character unique. But ultimately it's a poorly balanced mess that doesn't work for deatmatch style shooters so most characters end up becoming useless

"Tanks" in deathmatch is silly. Separating all the different movement tech into exclusive "skills" is baffling

Rainbow Six Siege is indeed great despite it's flaws. 240 hours and counting

That being said, its communities are fairly split between PC/PS4/Xbone, so it's really just a matter of taste

I understand entirely why Counter-Strike is popular. A good team with skilled players can do different set-ups and it might as well be up there with actual sports because of the communication, coordination and planning that goes into a round (when you're actually trying).

The problem is that people have been actually trying for years, and I haven't seriously played CS since Source (have only done GO on and off throughout the years). And I don't know the spray patterns, and ... I just have these memories of classic 1.6, CZ and even Source and when I play classic maps on GO it just feels wrong to me.

wouldn't the genre be "dying" on console if everybody is flocking to exactly CoD or battlefield leaving every other fps in the dust?

i actually heard of overwatch steadily losing player count on console which is just xd.

too bad what happened to battleborn and lawbreakers though... the competition is just too stiff.
