What do you think of them?

My coworker does that a lot. Right now, she is giving a tour at our workplace and she has said "um" about 10 times already.

Lacking in confidence, mostly. Nothing to make me dislike the person. Perhaps just respect them a little bit less as a first impression.

It's annoying but I realize it's an involuntary speech pattern so I deal with it.

I never notice it until it's pointed out, but apparently I instinctively say "um" a lot. The last time someone mentioned this was a few months ago, from a friend I used to work with at Walmart.

When he said that, I had a flashback to 4th grade. I was talking with a friend of mine during lunch, and suddenly he was just like, "Stop" and I was like, "Hm?" Then he said, "You can keep talking, but don't say 'um'." I was like, "...Do I say that a lot?" "Yes. You say it almost all the time."

And I actually remember during that lunch in 4th grade, trying to continue our conversation without me saying "um", but for some reason I found it so damn hard. Like, it kept distracting me from what I was saying, cause I was focused to much on forcing myself not to say "um". It was like trying not to was just shutting my brain down or something. Like I couldn't keep talking unless I said it a few times.

I like say like a lot even in text form.

It usually tells me they like talk before they can even think, so they say "um" and "like" a lot for filler to give them some room to think of what to say next. It's fine in a casual conversation, but it's annoying as hell when they're suppose to be teaching or giving a presentation.

As someone who used to be really shy around people, and still can be, I understand that really well and while it can be mildly annoying I know it's not really their fault or anything.

Grudge? It just becomes noticeable when a person is saying it about 30 times in the span of 5 minutes.

I mostly judge a person based on how they write since that's more permanent. You can also pretty easily replace that 'um' sound with a more dignified 'hmm' sound.

I think of 13 year old me or younger.

My mom actually got on me for that shit and it actually worked. Stopped doing it and I'm glad.

I don't really judge anyone that does, but it does come off as someone being nervous or unsure, or at worst just struggling to find the proper words to express what they want to get across. It's not a big deal, but at the same time you wouldn't want your lawyer or surgeon describing something like that.

I don't say "um" as much, but I say "like" and "I mean" a fuck ton as fillers, often paired together.

"Well yeah, but I mean, like," is way too common of a phrase for me.
