The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will host its final show Sunday, ending an incredible 146 year run.

“The Greatest Show on Earth” will perform for the last time at the Nassau Coliseum on Long Island in New York Sunday, ending an American tradition that dates back generations. Animal rights and advocacy groups are celebrating the demise of the circus as a major victory.

“All other animal circuses, roadside zoos, and wild animal exhibitors, including marine amusement parks like SeaWorld and the Miami Seaquarium, must take note: Society has changed, eyes have been opened, people know now who these animals are, and we know it is wrong to capture and exploit them,” People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) said in a statement after Ringling Bros. announced its plan to close in January.

Animal rights activists have been protesting Ringling Bros. for over 30 years, claiming that the circus abused animals and forced them to perform against their will. The circus retired its elephants in 2016. They then abruptly announced plans to permanently close after attendance took a sharp nosedive following the elephants’ removal from the show.

So happy I got to see them when I was a kid. Such a good show. Also, fuck PETA. They've harmed animals infinitely more than any circus.

Never really felt animals were essential to a good show.

Humans do much cooler shit. So good for animals. Too bad the business can't seem to adapt or thrive without them? Probably a lot of decent folk working there.

I'm sorry. I can't agree with shutting down zoo's.

Those keepers love the animals. They respect them. Said animals were rescued and thus would never be able to adapt to the wild.

@TC - you highlight the 146 year run of the circus. That really doesn't mean anything or justify it. For example, human civilization had slavery for 95% of our history, doesn't mean it's right.

Perhaps you should be more clear, then eh? That isn't innate knowledge and this is CE.

I can't highlight things without explaining why I hightlighted them? The point of highlighting is because most people will just skim the article. Knowing it ran for 146 years is just a thing to know, but it was also connecting to the sentence detailing when it ended.

You can do whatever you like to do. But, I wouldn't get upset if someone makes assumptions when you don't provide more information. Let's also remember that this is CE and most people post with an agenda and to stir the pot. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that you highlighted certain parts of the article to make a statement.

Would you prefer I not made this thread?

This. It's time we start going after some of these piss poor "zoos" we have in our country as well. The Erie PA zoo made me realize how fucked up zoos can be. They're not all bad but a lot of the smaller ones are inhumane.

There's really no need for them anymore. If kids want to learn about animals they have the internet now. There's no reason for the average person to need to see them in person ever in their life.

I'm kinda glad no more animals won't be exploited. Although I'm somehow sad that they are no longer going to be a thing even though I never really went to one. Maybe it's because of the commercials I kept seeing when I was a kid. I had a weird fascination with the circus aesthetic for some reason.

The article does mention they stopped using elephants last year, but apparently attendance took a nosedive. Though honestly I can't imagine them going on even with the elephants, it might have been something inevitable due to changing culture.

The big attendance driver for a circus is children, and kids want to see an elephant. The lack of elephants provides a useful and effective excuse for a parent to evade the issue.

Seriously sad but atleast I got to see it again it's last two years, PETA should burn in hell for shutting them down, they do more harm to animals then Ringling Bros. ever did.

146 years of greatness, wish they could have lasted to 150 and go out on their own terms instead of being forced out.

Not everyone believes that and it shouldn't be imposed on the rest of the world.

Additionally, just because a being doesn't have the same rights as humans does not mean it's permissible to abuse them or treat them cruelly. No rights != No respect

They don't have a right to be respected.

You people shouldn't go around imposing your beliefs that animals are entitled to respect. Let the people that want to see the elephants see the elephants since you're so tolerant. Don't impose your values on the entire culture.
