Brothers really went above and beyond

Not only did the older brother, aka one of the two characters you play as for the entire game, die at the end, but then you have to play as the younger brother by himself as he buries his brother. You are in control the entire time. The game closes with the father, for whom the two brothers had gone on a quest to find a cure to his disease, bawling uncontrollably over the Graves of his eldest son and wife (the wife dies in the intro).

I liked that game a lot but jfc

The first one is a Nes game where you are a kid that gets kidnapped by a monster and you are forced to save his planet with a baseball bat. It ends with you getting a present that you takes home, which contains a pretty princess. That turns into a monster and she starts creating more and more monster that will take over Earth.
...and then you wake up and prepares to go to school, only to discover that the monster that kidnapped you awaits and want some more fun
Harvest is a PC game where you wake up in bed next to some bloody remains and your girlfriend is missing. It ends with the game being a murder brainwashing simulator where you killed your girlfriend and you can chose to live with her forever in a VR world or go home to your parents house as a ticking bomb that just awaits to explode. Oh, your mind only survived five seconds in the VR world if you pick that option

GTA 4 you had to make a choice and both were sad and there wasn't no good ending. One was just less bad.

Either Roman dies and Kate leaves you.

Or Roman lives and Kate dies. Basically one option is both are gone, the other just one.

To me that is the most tragic ending if You or your partner actually don't come back. If it was perminant I would say it would be the cruelest to me at least. Grovyle's and Armaldo's story in Sky is rough too.

Persona 3

Xenoblade was pretty cruel with all the shit that happened to Melia / her people and those on Mechonis too. Sometimes it's hard to take JRPGs entirely seriously though, given their often over-the-top / fantastical nature.

Killer7 is a little bit with Garcian's sudden realization that he was the one who killed all of his personalities.

Neptunia Rebirth 2 Conquest ending is also pretty fucking dark.

Also Canonically Mortal Kombat Armageddon.

Taven spends thousands of years frozen in stone after believing his parents were murdered, Then the moment he wakes up he goes on a epic quest to save the realm and prevent Armageddon by defeating Blaze to strip all the warriors of their overgrowing powers. Along the way he discovers his father cheated on his mother and his brother has betrayed him.

He succeeds in his quest but the result backfires. Blaze has been corrupted and instead makes everybody super-powerful instead of Super-weak. Superpowerful enhanced Shao Kahn then murders everyone, takes over all the realms, kills every living thing and goes insane because there's nothing left to conquer. Meanwhile Taven is forced to watch helplessly as an elder God, forbidden to interfere

I know MK9 retconned that via "Time Travel into a new timeline" but stil... Sheesh.

It's not anywhere near the cruelest, but Mafia 2:



The main character Vito and his best buddy Joe get into some heavy shit, but you're given a deal by the mafia commission to get out of it by killing the main antagonist.

After you do it, the other mafia guys say they're going to take you both out to go celebrate, but Vito and Joe are taken in separate cars. You then see the car Joe is in turn in a different direction You're then told the deal only was for you and Joe, who is a pretty funny and likeable character, is taken away to be killed.

Not cruel like other endings here, but it did kinda bum me out. Nice twist though and it's realistic.

I only played throb once and got the good ending. Glad I didn't get either of the ones you mention.

your best friend gets taken away to be executed and you can't stop it. bullshit. if the game had let me, I could have killed all those guys and rescued him.

I'll try to get this right. After you beat the snot out of your first partner Kuni, who betrayed you and/or was possessed into betraying you, you learn the destiny of your partner Kurow, which he himself was horrified to learn earlier in the game. It turns out Kurow was created to be a vessel and prison for the final boss, and once he becomes that vessel, you have to kill him. It's even worse because Kurow can't even move or defend himself once he does this, and you need to draw the killing blow on the touch screen.

After Kurow and the final boss die and things are back to "normal", Kuni runs away from his adoptive parents to try to learn where he came from, and leaves on poor terms with his father. You keep expecting them to reconcile at the last second, but they don't. You play the whole game as a cute puppy with children as partners. How can it be that much sadder than Okami, where you play as an adult wolf?
