Is the 1060 sufficiently better such that if I were to be looking to get a new video card it'd be foolish to even think about a 1050?

1060 6GB model is significantly better.
3GB is a different 1060 card because NVIDIA was scummy on that model.

but i wouldn't bother with a 1050. just not really worth it when the 1060 and RX 480 are so cheap already.

With the prices I am looking at (amazon), the difference between a 1050 and a 1060 6GB is even less than $100.

go for the 1060. I think they released new 1060 cards today too that have more/faster memory in them. not sure if the base 1060 would drop in price though - it seems like a great card, a little better than the new rx 580

1050 is only worth getting if you're only playing MOBAs or building a mini tower.

Taking a look, that ASUS one may not fit my case. The 560ti I have now is apparently 9 inches, and there's not too much wiggle room beyond that. That ASUS one is 11.7 inches according to the listing, so at best it would be a tight squeeze and at worst just not fit. However, that evga single fan 6b card is actually smaller than the one I have now so it would for sure fit.

yeah, that's always the biggest concern. i waited for a long while until i got my RX 480, been happy with it and it just fits. but if i were to do a 1060, i'd no doubt go with the smaller form factors.

edit:
as for upgrading other parts, uh...
power supply is a possibility, if it's not strong enough. that's about it.

I did a little research and it looks like my current PSU has the wattage to handle a 1060.

This EVGA card even has 1-day shipping so I will get it tomorrow. Unless someone speaks up in the next couple minutes about something being wrong with it I will probably get that one.

quick check shows that on newegg you can get it for $230 too but also get either For Honor or Ghost Recon Warlands.
also if you want the better version that runs significantly cooler... it's just $10 more.

It's good you didn't get the EVGA. In general, when you're dealing with relatively new graphics cards, as the 10 series still is, you want to avoid single-fan cards. EVGA makes good cards imo, but that was not one of them.

That Gigabyte card is good, cool (temperature-wise) and well-reviewed. Should suit you well provided, as you say, the rest of your PC is compatible. With how old your other card was I'd think you might want to look at a total upgrade at some point in the relatively near future (on which you can stick this new card, of course), but I don't actually know your full build.

I just did a whole new build and the games I felt I needed to test out on it were The Witcher 3, DOOM, Hitman, Rise of the Tomb Raider, Fallout 4, Dark Souls 3, Forza Horizon 3 and Grand Theft Auto V

Of those, DOOM is currently on sale for $16. Rise of the Tomb Raider is $26. Dark Souls 3 is $24.

this is by no means a complete list or anything like that, just some of the AAA games from the past year or so that look damn good

They are are verified seller for worldwide Steam keys unless noted on individual game pages (usually in a big orange box that's hard to miss).
