I noticed that I could no longer download the attachments in my AOL emails after a few months of being in my inbox. Then in computer science class in college in 2006, my friend suggested using Yahoo mail (I could still download my attachments from it 11 years later). He also suggested Firefox for web browsing, so I didn't seem to need AOL for anything. I went on a trip in 2008 and my computer had crashed while I was away. Never installed AOL on the new computer.

I do miss having buddylists though. I remember talking to 8-10 people through IM at the same time.

Probably late 2000's because I used their DSL service for awhile because I couldn't get anything better where I lived.

Probably in 2001 or 2002, my family finally got broadband and started using other stuff. Would use the free AOL disks as coasters whenever they came in the mail.

AOL was ace back in the day. I think they were the first major provider that had a flat fee and used free numbers so your phone bill was manageable.

Stopped using them when we got cable, I think we upgraded to a 248kps line or something, that was a huge difference

I never used AOL. I did use AIM but that was it.

I started with prodigy, moved onto EarthLink / Mindspring for better dial up, AT&T for DSL, Comcast for Cable, and then Charter / Spectrum for better cable.

AIM was third-tier after Yahoo Messenger and MSN. It got better later on but by then IM was all but dead.

I still have AIM installed on my laptop but I never use it anymore. As for AOL, my family stopped using it when they found internet services that didn't hog up the phone line. I think it was 2000 or 2001 when we got rid of it.

Hmm, what was Prodigy like?

Prodigy was pay by hour and it was fucking terrible.

They also had subscriptions for things that you could not cancel unless you canceled your whole account.

It was easily the worst provider out of the big 3 (AOL, Prodigy, Compuserv)

we switched to a local ISP in late 1998, I suppose mainly because the AOL application was relatively demanding compared to just a web browser, and AIM obviated the need to use AOL for chatting with friends and family. stopped using AIM in the late 2000s because I had become a recluse. would gladly use it now, though, if anyone else still did. I miss my AIM and ICQ contacts.

I also miss the AOL profile search, back in high school I was actually able to find schoolmates on it. One of the first girls from there that I started talking to, who also ended up being a classmate, I still talk to today 16 years later.
