"According to Hohl, they noticed a man was spread across their row napping when they approached their seats, 24 B and C.

"Not wanting to wake the man, Hohl said they decided to sit three rows up in seats 21 B and C. He said they didn't think it would matter because the flight was half full with multiple empty rows.

"We thought 'not a big deal, it's not like we are trying to jump up into a first-class seat,'" said Hohl. "We were simply in an economy row a few rows above our economy seat."

"In a Boeing 737-800 like the one the couple was on, United considers Row 21 "economy plus," an upgrade.

"After sitting, Hohl said a flight attendant approached and asked if they were in their ticketed seats. The couple explained they weren't and asked if they could get an upgrade, but instead they were told they needed to return to their assigned seats.

"Hohl said after complying with the flight attendant's demand, a U.S. marshal came onto the plane and asked them to get off.

"The couple cooperated and got off the plane without incident, but they still don't understand why."

"These passengers repeatedly attempted to sit in upgraded seating which they did not purchase and they would not follow crew instructions to return to their assigned seats.

Yeah. I think there's something missing in the story.

The couples first reason anyway was stupid to even move up and get a free upgrade.

Who cares if the plane is empty. Also who cares if the dude is sleeping. You're boarding a plane. You don't immediately fall asleep. Story is bs. If I see seats up in first class I'm not just gonna plop my ass there and say oh can you just upgrade me while I'm here.

Look United did a horrible thing yes but don't go abusing shit.

One of the sides aren't being honest. I'm leaning towards the couple lying.

United saying they were trying to do it numerous times to bump themselves sound worse.

Oh! we saw a guy sleeping on our seats so we'll move up a couple more rows up where it's conveniently a higher class/upgrade?

If anything United should have talked to the dude taking up the entire row. See how the article didn't mention that?

They were probably just insisting for them to stay in the upgraded seats.

i got on a flight once and it was pretty empty and there was an old guy sleeping in the middle rows and the other people just moved to different seats cuz the flight was empty and the attendants said do whatever you want bub

Obviously I can't speak for this flight or United in general, but last time I flew Delta we paid extra for economy plus and literally the only difference is that you get a couple more inches of leg room. Only reason it was worth it is because I'm 6'5"
