One of the possible essay question for my upcoming midterm is "Discuss the benefits and problems Cultural Relativism and Ethnocentrism, be complete"
Here's the definition for Cultural Relativism: "The idea that one must suspend judgement of other people's practices in order to understand them in their own cultural terms"
Which basically means being open about their cultures. I can see pros in that regard, but cons? I really can't see any, but then again, I've been really about being open minded about everything since I started doing the green tobacco a long time ago.(I quit now though)
Ethnocentrism basically means being overly patriotic, and thinking that your own culture is better than anything else out there, and I can see some pros and cons about that, so no real help needed there.
Maybe they eat bugs. And then you're all "oh, that's interesting" (in a non-judgmental way) and then they're like "here try some" and you can't think of a polite way to say no (because that would be, like, so judgmental) and soon you are being forced to eat an entire bucket of bugs.
That seems like a con. Unless you like bugs.
-- You put your RESOLVE HAT back on, which conveniently is the same hat as your NORMAL HAT. {Drakeryn}
Being open about another culture can cause you to idealize their culture or get a misrepresentation of what it is. For example a lot of anime viewers are open about the culture and some even want to live their, but they don't realize some of the problems of the culture such as the overcrowding.
Basically, being open can equal not seeing the negatives.
