What wonderful timing! Right after Capcom seems to be making moves to shelf this franchise for good, I'm getting into it for the first time!

I still haven't downloaded the game yet but I will likely head off to my Wii and do that.

This topic will likely include more games as well. I'm basically waiting to start playing through Final Fantasy VII, which I can't do until I get a PS3, which I can't do until I move to Britain (because if I get a PS3 here in India, I'll have to get an expensive adapter to make it work in Britain).

Also I noticed that I randomly have 1100 Nintendo Points sitting around, so why not spend them?

I'll start once my tuition and breakfast are done with, which will be in about one and a half hours.

Buying one of the anniversary collections is probably a better idea (if you plan to play the other Mega Man games, at least).

I'm somewhat interested to follow this either way, though.

Dear god, can't say I noticed that!

Okay, I visited everyone's level and had lots of trouble. Eventually, however, my perseverance was rewarded and I emerged victorious against Flash Man and Crash Man. So far, however, the only other robot master I was able to get to is Wood Man.

I absolutely love this game so far however. It's weird how well the game has aged technically. I also love the level and enemy designs, although this Mega Man's brand of platforming clearly requires more rote memorization than Mario's. Argh. Also I was getting infuriated at the game's physics engine, which reminded me of all those I Wanna Be the Guy YouTube LPs I've seen. I remembered Cloud8745 shouting during his LP, "it's Mega Man's I don't care physics all over again", and now I know why. This game's difficulty does feel occasionally unfair, but the rockin' music and artistic splendor make me want to continue.

I might return to the game later today.

However, now I have absolutely zero doubt that I should do a NES/SNES marathon someday. When, I have no idea. It might not be until a few years down the line!

Oh yeah, and I have to add a small "story" here for little reason.

(My doorbell rings, and as I open the door...)

Me: A robot? Huh? Oh, it's Mega Man!

Computer: Incoming transmission!

Me: Gee, I wonder who it could be?

Samus: Mega Man is at your place, is he not?

Me: Sure he is.

Samus: He's a friend of mine, and he's coming to your home with a portal to one of his experiences.

Me: Wait a sec...aren't there many Mega Man characters?

Samus: This is the original, not some fraud like Mega Man Volnutt. I picked up a few tricks from him myself. He had a charge beam before I did, for instance, though you won't get to see it. You'll be taken back to when his abilities were at a bare minimum.

Sonic: Samus and I conferred with Mario and Link that you've avoided one member of the "Acrobats' Club" for too long.

Me: Wait, what's the Acrobats' Club?

Sonic: It's a group consisting mainly of Mario, Samus, Link (yes we understand this is a bit of an inconsistency but come on), Mega Man, and I, along with our associates. Yet we always forgot to introduce you to Mega Man.

Samus: Since I'm easily the oldest, I'm the leader of the group. Regardless, have fun with Mega Man.

Me: I sure will!

Computer: Transmission over.

It helps when you haven't played many games!

It's extremely weird in a way - I only really started gaming in 2008 with stuff like Super Mario Galaxy and Super Smash Bros. Brawl, yet nowadays I have the most fond memories for games from the NES and SNES eras (and my favorite games outside of that era are the two Super Mario Galaxies...and then Resident Evil 4 close behind), and Mega Man 2 has officially joined my "circle of timelessness" along with 16 other games (half of which are from the NES and SNES eras and two of which are from the N64 era) which I will defend to the death and will never understand why people hate them.

It also probably doesn't help that I'm really into futuristic technology now for whatever reason, and Mega Man 2 goes well with that. So will Final Fantasy VII and Metal Gear Solid, likely.

Also a lot of fond memories of mine come from watching YouTube LPs of I Wanna Be the Guy, and Mega Man's influence there is so apparent it isn't even funny.

Yet, correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Mega Man 2 only worked on by its developers in their spare time? It certainly feels like a game that that extra love was devoted to.

According to Wikipedia, Capcom was apparently against making a sequel to the original Mega Man since it was not very successful.

I'd like to talk more about some things relating to the game. First of all, does doing Wood Man next sound like a good idea? He's the only boss that I've actually gotten to. Also I presume that I get the "shell bombs" from defeating Crash Man, and I tried using Time Stop against him and it seemed to do nothing. Does using special powers only during boss battles sound like a good idea? After all, I've been having far more difficulty with the actual platforming than with the enemies themselves (not that the enemies are a pushover, oh no! They definitely have more "personality" to them than the enemies in Mario's brand of platforming, dear god - I freaked out when I saw a giant robotic dog breathing fire, thinking "Cerberus!" for some reason). The one-hit KO spikes in Bubble Man's stage are especially offending. What is this, I Wanna Be the Guy? Oh wait, IWBTG probably got the idea from MM2, d'oh!

I also got the "level 3" powerup which allows Mega Man to create a platform to skid up something. I didn't find out what it does until I accidentally used it against Crash Man, but thinking about it, it could have serious usefulness in retrieving items stashed in "un-reachable" places. It's almost like Metroid! Heck I AM playing as a character with an arm cannon...

I would like to additionally discuss what I would do as part of a possible NES/SNES era marathon, though I expect that this discussion may dissolve quickly. Just for fun though, please? Here's what's in the RPI top 30 in Leonhart's Contest from those eras, rough order of release date, which gave me an idea of where to start:

Mega Man 2
Super Mario Bros. 3
Super Mario World
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Super Metroid
Sonic 3 & Knuckles
Final Fantasy VI
Chrono Trigger
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy Kong's Quest
Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow

Eh.

This is what I do, but a lot of people don't. In MM2 particularly a lot of people use a certain special weapon throughout the stages.

Okay, Quick Man, Wood Man, Metal Man, and Bubble Man have all bit the dust.

I remembered that I could use the self-made platform to retrieve the extra life at the start of Quick Man's stage, and I did that - in fact, on the successful try, I think I was able to retrieve all three extra lives in the stage. I immediately recognized the lasers from I Wanna Be the Guy, but all the rote memorization needed was a little agonizing. I think I felled Quick Man using Crash Man's shell bombs. At one point I used Time Stop and noticed that Quick Man took a lot of damage from that, but after it failed to do any damage several times, I deduced that it was because I had carefully timed the Time Stop to coincide with Quick Man getting attacked.

Wood Man's robotic forest was far more about the enemies that the platforming. Yesterday I was thinking "WHOA" when I saw the giant fire-breathing robot dogs, and as for Wood Man himself, I could never figure out what to do against him until I found out how TERRIBLE he is at dealing with Crash Man's bombs. Four down, four more to go.

Metal Man's stage was full of conveyor belts and gears, kinda like Final Egg in Sonic Adventure. I remember getting an extra energy tank only to realize that I had screwed myself, but ultimately I kept both intact for the rest of the stage.

This time in Bubble Man's stage, I completely avoided getting hit by the one-hit KO spikes. I think I got to Bubble Man without dying, and then found out that Metal Man's gears are so powerful once I was right on the verge of dying.

This leaves Air Man and Heat Man, to stages full of perilous platforming that requires rote memorization. Joy. Actually, that likely wasn't so sarcastic!

Quick Man loses about half his life to the Time Stopper, assuming it's fully charged. Most people seem to use the Time Stopper right away and then kill him with other weapons, but I prefer to get him down to half and then use the Time Stopper to finish him off, so I don't end up losing and fighting him with no Time Stopper.

Once I started using certain weapons against the bosses, this came back to me in a flash. I forgot otherwise.

Plus I thought the "weaknesses" were because of certain weapons being better suited to dealing with certain bosses' movement paths, not actual weaknesses!

I'll probably beat the game WHILE I'm playing through FF7 since I really don't want to leave it unfinished, and it shouldn't take long since I only have two robot masters left and then Dr. Wily's levels, right? It'll take a few weeks though.

Not true at all. Almost every boss in MM2 has multiple weaknesses, and the Crash Bombs do more damage than your regular shots against Wood, Bubble, Flash, and Quick Man, as well as Wily's first form.

Of course, you'd never actually use it against Wily, because...
