Board 8 > Is there a way to activate Steam while offline?

I'm going to take my laptop to a place without internet, and I'll want to play some games on Steam. Will it be impossible to activate it if I turn the computer off?

If Steam can't connect to the internet, it automatically offers to run in offline mode. Pretty sure you can play any game while in offline mode as long as you've previously started that game while online at least once.

Admittedly I don't try to play in offline mode very often, though.

This. For some reason offline works fine when I do this, but steam won't start up when I don't do this first and don't have internet access.

I recommend this. A week or so ago I couldn't play offline because steam wanted to update.. but couldn't update because i was offline...

offline steam has never, ever worked for me.

Hell, steam barely reads my router when online.

If you set Steam to remember your password, you can usually get into offline mode while not connected. If not, you're SOL

Best bet if you haven't left is to put it in offline mode before you leave internet, and just hibernate your laptop until you want to play it

I've never had a problem with offline Steam, either. Of course you won't be playing TF2 or L4D, but indie games have always worked fine for me.

Have you guys tried adding -tcp at the end of the target in properties for it?

I did it and any problems I had with online mode vanished, and it also seemed to fix my offline problems somehow.

I was on train recently and offline mode was being ornery. Somehow Steam knew that it needed to be updated and refused to start in offline mode, so I had to wait until we passed through a town with public wireless and let it do its thing. So make sure you can start it up in offline mode before you head out.
