I have no familiarity with Gundam, but the Wikipedia article with the Japanese pronunciation makes it pretty clear.

They've been pronouncing it "Shar" for a long time. The only official localization that's pronounced it "CH-ar" is found in the original movie trilogy -- but that trilogy got a lot of things wrong like Gundam being pronounced "Gun-damn".

It's the earliest thing they brought over here and very few watched it so it's rather legendary for its screw-ups.
