Oh yeah. Lots of people wanted the original design but in movie form.
In their defense, the filmmakers were originally going to use the comic-accurate look and it did look pretty cool:

Weird. I was one of the ones that thought it looked dumb but I never got that impression from anyone else.

My dislike of it stemmed from 4 things:

  • It isnt just dissimilar to the comic book version, it looks nothing like the comic version.
  • It doesnt have any purple accents, so it looks too monochromatic.
  • Its backstory makes no sense. Whats with the goblin motif? Why does it look so evil?
  • Not having it be make-up means we get segments where Willem Dafoe cant ham it up. One of the most recognizable things about the Goblin is that hes insane. Having his face be covered by an unchanging metal mask kills some of the fun (kinda same for Spidey up until MCU to a lesser extent).
These all being the case, Green Goblin is one of my least favorite supervillains, so I never really cared that much.

That's why he had retractable lenses and a mesh in the mouthpiece. At least that's how they justified it on The Making Of extra on the DVD

The only thing I dislike is the mouth.

I feel like if it was just like the bottom part of the helmet was open like Batmans cowl it'd have looked a little less silly
