I actually am writing my thesis on this. 50 pages lol. Yes it helps but the genre of music that will help the most depends what you are doing.

Yes, but they have to be songs that hype me up, then after a few songs, I get into the rhythm and put on a a podcast.

Huh. I'd actually like to hear more about this. Generally I've found that rock/metal helps me out more, but that's mostly because it's just more "hardcore" than, say, Bach or Mozart or whatever.

But that also falls in line with my own tastes in music so it's pretty biased and anecdotal.

I do seem to recall hearing that rock and metal do at least get your heart pumping more though so that might be a contributor?

If you are just working out just because and want more intensity, metal and rock will do it. If you are going for endurance, try something a bit slower and softer, but still to your liking. The example in my paper is some dude who is a professional rower and he uses the Red Hot Chili Peppers to keep himself in rhythm. Your body will naturally move to the speed of the music. Ballet dancers need slower music to keep them composed and I talk about that too.

When people say music helps, theyre probably talking about the adrenaline rush that would enable them to lift more weight than normal. For me personally, ive found I get a much more effective adrenaline rush from talking to people between sets. Kind of ironic because Im usually one of those guys that tries to avoid talking to other people when Im at the gym.

When I ran music would help distract me from the breathing so I could have a more natural breathing rhythm.

it doesn't matter what genre as long as you like the music.

Yo, CE, I plan on blending a banana, with almond milk, some protein powder I have and top it all off with Quaker oats before my exercise tonight. Yay or nay?

Music absolutely helps.

When I get really into the music while exercising, I can even start to feel the blood pumping through my head.

That said, I don't think metal and rock are the "best" music for exercising. I like all kinds of music, and sometimes it's pop, jazz, classical, disco, funk, or even ambient or avant garde music that put me in the zone. I couldn't bear to listen to nothing but rock and heavy metal at the gym all the time, it'd wear thin pretty quickly.

This guy may not even be facetious. Id say instrumental only music is probably better, because music with words can be distracting.

Music seems to function as a general distraction for me when exercising, so I don't feel fatigue/my own natural limitations as much. Takes the focus away from that, so I feel like I can push myself harder.

I also stopped listening to music at the gym a long time ago, because I honestly find I get distracted too easily and end up skipping songs a lot. I love all the songs I have, but it's too easy for me to be like "Eh, I'd rather listen to something else" and just keep jumping around with breaks up the flow of my workout and slows me down a lot. It got worse when I started using my phone for music rather than a dedicated MP3 player because then of course your phone is right there and you can easily just start browsing the Internet or whatever.

Im being dead serious bro. And youre right about lyrics. Im more calm and having fun when I have words to sing along to, my best and most intense runs are with classical piano and maybe sometimes instrumental Progressive Metal.

I listen to Death Metal and Hardcore Punk on my downtime.
