Is it Wolfenstein 3D or Doom?

Wolfenstein came before Doom but there were other stuff before those like Maze Wars. Wolfenstein is definitely the major one though that put the genre on the map.

I never understood this. GoldenEye is super easy to control. There are very few times you can't plow through every enemy by pointing in their general direction.

This topic reminds me of a ludicrous claim I once heard that GoldenEye was the first console FPS.

Doom was ported to the Jaguar in 1994 and the Playstation a year later, and prior to that, the ill-fated 3DO got a Wolfenstein-esque maze shooter named Escape From Monster Manor in late 1993.

he must have been a console kid. alot of people that never played PC had no idea what was on pc, and didn't even know about FPS until Goldeneye came out. But to still think that, even in 2017 as an adult is kinda dumb. he should have heard of games like Doom by now.

I think he's just dumb, Doom came out on SNES. Also Turok came out before Goldeneye IIRC

while you were still in your diapers, people on PC were playing Wolfenstein, Doom and Quake, and developing the genre so that you could eventually play your precious Goldeneye. if it wasn't for those pinoneers, Goldeneye never would have existed. so no, they mattered.

The initial debate started out on the subject of video games and which ones we were looking forward to. I said Wolfenstein II, but he didn't know what Wolfenstein was (I realized that it's really hard trying to describe the modern Wolfenstein games to people), so one of the things I mentioned to him was that it was one of the first big FPS games and he said, "Nuh Uh. James Bond was."
I was shocked.
"GoldenEye?", I asked. "For the Nintendo 64?"

And yeah, that's what he was referring to. He was so sure too. He kept telling me I was wrong and for a bit, I thought he was fucking with me but he was deadly serious. So I made the bet and pulled up gameplay videos of OG Wolfenstein and Doom and show that they predated GoldenEye by the years all of them were released. He admitted defeat and, surprisingly gave up the $10 right there.

I played Wolfenstein when it first came out. It kinda sucked. Doom was better. I would not have recommended either to anyone other than people who had an expensive PC (very few people back then). Goldeneye was really the first shooter like that the masses had access to due to low cost of the system it was on.

Btw, your attitude is why the general public looks down on PC gamers. Pretty nasty elitist attitude for something that sucks to most members of the general public. Only gamers even knew about Wolfenstein. Doom came as a freebie in one of those PC magazines one day (same with Civilization) and that helped the popularity if both tremendously. It's hard for a game to find a larger fan base if only a few know about it. Worse still if said fanbase is elitist and dilusional (how I viewed most PC gamers and my opinion hasn't changed much over the years). To Joe Public, PC gaming barely exists in their perspective if at all.

For a jrpg example, take the Persona series. This means starting with Persona 3 to most newer fans. Few played Persona 1 or 2 and very few know that SMT has nothing to do with Persona at all. However, this is still foolishness to Joe Public who hasn't heard of any of this stuff. If they follow modern culture, they can probably mention SMT 3 exists but they mean Persona 3 and not Nocturne. It's kinda like that.

Might be true. That's not the point though. Goldeneye was most people's gateway into FPS. That's a fact. This does not mean it was first overall because it was not. But to a casual, they might consider it their first and that's fair and easy to understand. That was the gist of the initial point of the thread. I've heard many people say this irl. I correct them (sometimes) but it's not hard to understand their viewpoint or at least it shouldn't be.
