It's rather unspectacular within the series. Better than Judgment at least.

The campaign missed the mark with what they were going for. They initially said they were going back to the horror-like roots of the first game with dark, ominous themes and smaller scale, more intimate environments, but apparently the team "just wasn't meshing with that vibe" and it ended up capitalizing on neither horror nor epic action.

The multiplayer is trash. It caters entirely to stripped-down boring esports mechanics. All the maps play the same (because optimal competition, bro!) and more stuff was removed than was added or replaced.

The RNG card pack mechanic is the worst in the industry for fucking over players and encouraging gambling addiction, as well as the infamous $50 season pass that gets you private match and 1 week early access to maps that are free for everyone. The free map updates each month were almost all remakes. There have been 22 out of 24 planned maps released and only 4 have been new. A handful of maps weren't even remakes and were just alternate versions of launch maps with different environmental conditions.

Horde is great but more repetitive, and it's awful if people don't know how to play their class. The whole thing hinges upon knowing your class yet the game does a terrible job of explaining that.

Horde's fun. I wish they did more stuff like the 25 waves and Feral Horde events to shake things up, also wish more people were willing to play as an Engineer. I hate it when people buy anything or a repair kit on the wrong class. There's a reason I'm not repairing something even though we have the money, ffs switch to Engineer if you wanna buy shit.

Hammer of Dawn spam is a fine waste of money though.

I played it a lot when it first came out.

Eager to see how the story plays out with the big reveal at the end.

Multiplayer was pretty much like 3

Horde was awesome but unless it's changed since launch, its the exact same waves every time except for the bosses. It'd be cool if they switched it up more.

The microtransaction system was and probably still is completely awful. They should have adopted 343's system from Halo 5.

It was a forgettable turd. I loved 1-3. I spent so much time playing Horde and mp in 2 and 3.
After 4, I have no interest in what's next. The series is done as far as I'm concerned. Characterless leads, robots instead of monsters for way too much of the campaign with promises of even more robots in 5. Because that's what I wanted in Gears. Generic robot enemies. Garbage mp and Horde.
There's was just soooooo much I hated about 4. I mean absolutely hated.

Both Gear and Halo are in the same boat. They've perfected their own formulas. Which is a blessing and curse.

They're fun to play, but as series they've both plateau'd. So far they seem unable to evolve. The entries just come and go.
