After I beat X, should I play Sun/Moon? I've heard they're kind of divisive because of how different they are from the other games.

It was the last Pokmon game I play led and it bored me to tears. The Alola non mythic/legendary pool of Pokmon are mostly trash. The is forgettable and evil team leader in that game was completely insane.

To a generally disturbing degree.

I'd recommend the Ultra versions rather than the originals. I'm playing Ultra Moon right now (for the first time in a while) and enjoying it quite a bit.

The ultra versions are very similar to the originals but not so much that they are worth separate playthroughs. I would play one of those instead of sun/moon.

Alola suffers from not having a definitive edition.

USUM is a significantly better gameplay experience, but drops the ball HARD on the plot.

SM has a much more coherent story, but is probably the worst set of "first-in-the-generation" games in the series gameplay-wise.

Probably my least favorite of the mainline games, and the last ones i bought.

People praise the story, but other than there being more of it than other games, its still not good. I think i actually prefer pokmon games not even trying to make the story the main focus.

USUM is the better game mechanically but is less interesting plot wise.

Worth a play, but just the one. Also it runs like complete dog shit.

Im honestly turned off by how desperate GameFreak has gotten with Mega forms, alternate forms, etc.

I wish they would get back to their roots and make a game
with only one gen of Pokemon to choose from.

Regional forms are actually really fun. Other stuff like Mega forms and Z forms are just stupid imo.

Black/White had the right idea where you only encounter new Pokmon with previous gens being discoverable as post-game content.

Alola has some great pokemon designs and variety from other generations, but so much of what you can find in the wild is really really REALLY slow.

The region is pretty and packed with things to look at and interact with but you're going to experience it all on rails. Cutscenes and roadblocks halt your progress every 10 minutes.

There's not much for puzzles or dungeons, though that was on the decline in XY as well.

Was that the one with the super annoying troupe of friends constantly interrupting your gameplay? One in particular a fat kid who would never shut up about dancing?

I have mixed feelings about Sun and Moon. The Pokemon in the games themselves are fantastic, but the story leaves much to be desired, and the amount of literal blockades the game puts in front of you is asanine. As you know each game takes place on 3-4 islands. Imagine Cerulean City, but multiplied by every single town you visit. It's infuriating.

I will suggest that after you get through the main series, that you start playing some of the fan roms. Pokemon Clover, Opalo (This one is frustrating to find an English version for as most are in Spanish), Uranium and there are a couple others that just blow me away. There are a couple that are buggy and will outright break at some points so you have to do save states for them, but the detail is far better than anything the Pokemon Company/Game Freak have put out the past few years.

That was X and Y, the generation after Black/White and their sequels.

no that was gen 6 with X and Y.

Gen 5 was black and white. You had almost 0 access to any pre-gen 5 pokmon without trading until post game. People claimed they wanted something fresh, and then cried when they got exactly that.

Gen 5 was so treated so poorly for how good the games were. Still has what i consider the best stories in the mainline games, and were the last games that felt like complete experiences.

The problem for me was that so many of Black/White's Pokemon were conceptually similar enough to Gen 1's Pokedex that it kind of felt like they were trying to reboot the franchise entirely

And i loved it for that. It was a big risk to live and die solely on entirely new pokmon. You had no choice but to play with a brand new team instead of falling back to old favorites.

If anything i think the series wouldve been in better shape if it actually was a reboot.

Oh I wasn't faulting it for going all-in on the new Pokedex, just that too many of the new designs felt like a facelift of an already-existing Pokemon

Sun and Moon are flawed games, and they seem to annoy a lot of people. However, I think they are great and will have a reappraisal in time.

They look amazing for the DS, they introduce some great characters (Guzma, Nanu), they follow through on the larger scale story instead of cutting it short like they did with XY. The new Pokemon are good too.

SM are also the games where you start getting good QoL features for breeding/training, and you no longer have to rely on RNG to get that perfect Legendary thanks to Hypertraining.

Excepting the above which is very accurate, by objective criteria, base Sun and Moon are the best games in the series. They are absolutely must-plays. If you enjoy them, play Ultra later.

A lot of people (myself included) dislike the abundance of unskippable dialogue that is constantly interrupting your adventure. Its not as bad on a first run, but on subsequent replays its really hard to stomach. The performance for the totem battles is also complete trash with or without 3D, but given recent games that probably isnt too surprising.

its probably the worst gen for me because it made me think I outgrew pokemon. The dex is the only good thing, it might have my favourite group of new mons since gen 3. Id have to think about it but there are tons of designs I really like.

No lmao this is a wild statement

Absolutely not even close to being the best games in the series, much less objectively.
