Pretty much. Only a handful of people seriously argued for pirates.

I briefly entertained the possibility that it's like a death battle, and in that case pirates might have a chance. But if pirates and ninjas were really to fight each other, the ninja would wait for them to go to sleep and stealth kill everyone, beginning with the lookout.

This was settled in 1881 when ninja's attacked Long John Silver on the Hispaniola when it was cutting through the Asian Minor, and the 13 Ninja's lost to Long John Silver himself.
Yes, their master didn't participate, still being in Japan - but I think it settles the argument.
Also, while many scholars argue that they were weakened by their fight of the Hashshashins who had time traveled into the future, in my opinion this shouldn't be factored in, because as everyone knows Long John Silver himself and his crew had just fought off the White Whale, and taken casualties.

we should be talking about the ratio.

how many pirates would you take, to win against a ninja. the pirates and their galleons vs a single ninja. they are both on an island in the pacific, approx 1 x 3 miles in area. it's got a mountain, some caves, a waterfall, lagoon, forest, sandy beaches.

the pirates know that they are trying to kill the ninja and that the ninja is on the island
the ninja knows that the pirates know, but it dedicated to killing them all

how many pirates do you need to kill the ninja? the lowest bidder wins.

I think with 1000 pirates the ninja stands no chance.

If the ninja is allowed to use his stealth and subterfuge, pirate doesnt stand a chance. The power of a surprise first strike is just too powerful.

If the fight is a pure look each other in the eye and 1v1 commences type fight, its just whoever is the more skilled fighter, as the tech parity is close enough (both can use edged or primitive firearm weapons and would be similarly lightly armored) that neither will really stand out as the better option, so basically a wash.

I give the edge to ninja.

I mean the blunderbuss would shred them in head on fight. Ninjas ain't as crazy skilled ad fiction makes out. They where mostly farmers and used stealth because they knew they couldn't win a straight up fight.

So it boils down to do they get to use stealth or not.

pirates win due to brute strength and combat experience. Ninjas have to be stealthy because they wouldn't do well in a 1v1 fight.

Pirates are trained for combat. Ninjas are trained for intel gathering and assassination.

Pirates have big boobs. Ninjas have small boobs.

They were still pretty extensively trained. As assassins rather than fighters, sure, but the overall aggregation of the decentralized arts of Ninjitsu still includes a number of combat arts, especially armed.

But I do agree it's likely not enough to combat a particularly skilled pirate toe-to-toe. Pirates were also frequently trained in combat, and frequently by some of the most powerful militaries in the world, considering many pirates were actually former soldiers in the greatest navies of Europe.

I really think stuff like the gun I mentioned is enough though. For those unfamiliar it's basically the musket rifle version of a shotgun. Could literally use anything you could cram down the barrel as ammo.

Most real ninjas didn't dress in black and get into standup fights. They looked like a normal peasant and if they needed to assassinate someone (and this was rare, they were mainly doing espionage) it would be with poison, while they are sleeping, when no one is looking, etc. A lot of the weapons they used were farming equipment because you could carry it without raising suspicions.

It's a difficult "battle" to analyze since the two factions operated on entirely different motivations and methods.

A pirate has little to no reason to ever get into a fight with ninjas. They want loot, and depending on the time period, to carve out their own little self-governing haven.

Ninjas would be unlikely to be going after "pirates" but rather a specific captain, crew, or ship.

Battle comes down to who is the aggressor and where it's taking place. I could see either "side" winning. Though I'd give the edge to ninjas only because their objectives would probably be, by nature, more simple and easy to achieve. Assassinating one guy or burning down a docked ship at night vs taking out a whole ship or fortress for plunder.

Donr pirates typically stay at sea more than on land? And it's not like they have a known schedule. Just finding the pirate would prove difficult

And I'd imagine it would be difficult to approach a pirate shit unnoticed on the open sea.

I think most people think a straight up fight between the two. Cause if stealth was a option it's a unfair advantage

Depends on the time period. Head to Jamaica during the golden age of piracy and they weren't exactly lying low down there. If someone were dead set on finding one, it wouldn't be hard to track them down and stake them out while they weren't at sea.
