Never forget just how incredible Ground Zeroes was. The flame that burns twice as bright lasts half as long. Well Ground Zeroes is about 2 hours long against the 50 hours of Phantom Pain, so it burned like 25 times brighter.

  • Big Boss being a big hero.
  • Incredible dense isolated setting with no wasted land.
  • All substance. No fat.
  • Skull Face comes across as one of the most sinister and vile villains ever.
  • Skull Face doesn't take you on a 9 minute jeep ride with long awkward silence.
  • Skull Face doesn't wear a lone ranger mask.

Ground Zeroes doesn't get enough love. It shouldn't have to pay for the sins of the Phantom Pain.

Agreed. GZ was a MUCH better game.

FWIW, it took me a lot longer than 2 hours to S Rank everything. I dunno exactly how much longer but there were some missions that took more than 2 hours of tries for the S Rank.

Of course, that was going for full stealth. If it's like TPP, you can probably just charge through at full tilt and S Rank it anyway. I never tried it though.

Was never a demo. It's like calling the tanker chapter of 2 a demo.

Shoulda been $25 or $30, but that was then. You can get it for $3 now so who cares about the price tag?

No. There's a really good one, but nothing as big (or good) as Camp Omega.

Yeah with the side missions and rankings/collectibles, it's about 8-10 hours long.

Absolutely. Even if Ground Zeroes is a short tragedy, it hits super hard. The atmosphere and tone in that game is off the charts as well.

Yeah. There's a base that's much bigger. Much much bigger. So much bigger that they give you jeeps to drive around it and getting from place to place is still boring AF.

Then there are the main maps, which are like a bajillionty trillion square miles and have not a damn thing in them. Like, maybe an airport somewhere. Then then other 95% of the map is just there to be a pain in the ass to travel across. Oh look there's a little shed here with a tape in it. One little shed with a tape in our way out in the middle of no-the-hell-where.

There's no stage design. You're punished for having fun. Your best options long-term are always your most boring options. It's so much less fun of a game to play than GZ.

It's funny how Skull Face seems like a completely different character in both games. In Ground Zeroes he is a real terrible bastard, in Phantom Pain he is a cartoon villain.

Probably dumped 100 hours into GZ and 200 into Phantom Pain. Great games in their own right tho a full game like GZ would have been hands down the greatest game ever made.

TPP was such a shitty game

like the controls and whatnot were so tight, but the actual playing of the game was so damn boring

GZ was goated though and TPP should have just been that but more

I'll never forgive the person who convinced Kojima that open-world was the way to go, because Phantom Pain was an overall disappointing experience, IMO.

it would have been cool if the whole game, or almost all of it, took place in Camp Omega, and you unlocked more of it as the story went on.

like, ideally, it would be cool to have games with levels in Afghanistan and places in Africa, but Phantom Pain kept reusing the same bases, and the areas outside of those bases were mostly empty, so they weren't that fun.

Ground Zeroes is such an embarrassment. Literally the moment Konami decided it was OK to charge for the tanker mission. I'll never understand the weird fanboy worship it gets.

Yes, there's an excellent one toward the end of the game, and a few really good ones interspersed through the game. The real issue with TPP was that there's just too much dead space in between the large bases. And the large bases are only truly populated and built for stealth during missions, they're just kind of whatever during the free roam.

It's a better designed game than The Phantom Pain. Camp Omega is a brilliantly designed area. The Phantom Pain's open world is empty with nothing to do.

2 hours? Maybe if you include the optional missions and objectives. I did the main stuff in 45 minutes.

Overall phantom pain was better simply cause more content. But for what there was ground zero was designed better.

Phantom pain just needed 2 or 3 bases as well designed for major story missions.

TPP if anything should have had one open world map with bases the size of Camp Omega in GZ. You could have had smaller checkpoints out in the world.

Also should have had convoys bigger than one truck, and eventually have helicopters join in the further you progressed that happened more frequently.
