I would not be surprised if she does more #s than MJ. More people exist in the world than MJs time. But proportionately does she command the same respect? Asking because legitimately curious of your thoughts.

I don't think so.

Micheal Jackson is known as the "King of Pop", and while Taylor is obviously a widely popular and successful artist, she isn't regarded as the Queen/Princess of anything yet.

plus, Mike Jack has sold more than her overall:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_music_artists

I think that Taylor also makes good music, but time will have to tell whether any of it is "classic".

didnt check link but i doubt album sales is a valid metric moving forward since exposure to music has changed so much.

in the same way i wouldnt for example use swifts eras tour as her being a bigger concert performer when MJs doesnt even break the top 20 of top grossing tours

This site created a formula to sort of "even the odds" between artists of the past a present, weighing it so that things like streams and digital/physical album sales are proportionally equal.

The table shows the top artists of all-time using the following ratios:

Studio album: sales of the original album (ratio 1/1)
Other LPs: sales of compilations generated thanks to the album (ratio 1/1)
Physical singles: sales of physical singles from the album (added to CSPC total with a ratio 3/10 for 2-tracks, 5/10 for EPs and Maxis)
Digital singles: sales of digital singles from the album (ratio 1.5/10 for CSPC total)
Streaming: equivalent album sales of all the album tracks (ratio 1/1500 for Audio stream and 1/6750 for Video stream)

Taylor Swift doesn't even make the Top 10.

Doubt it, I still have Vietnamese and Brazilian cousins that don't even know who she is, hell one of them got her named confused with that shirtless wolf dude from Twilight. MJ, on the other hand, is a whole other level. That is not to say TS doesn't deserve the fame she got, but I agree with another user saying, business wise, she's a lot more savy at it than MJ probably was.

Kradek posted...

Yeah she got a bigger boost in popularity thanks to her ability to out-manuever the music execs that tried to control her music.

Artists like Michael Jackson and The Beatles and Elvis before him were at their peak in a completely different era when you think about how media was distributed.

Just look at TV.

The highest rated TV show of 1982, the year "Thriller" was released, was Dallas, with a 24.8 share.

The highest rated (non-Live Sports) TV show now is NCIS, at about a 2.9 share.

There's just SO MANY more ways to get media.

It's a fundamentally different time, a fundamentally different technological, economic, and cultural situation. It's pretty hard to do any type of historical comparison.

But anecdotally, she has white women on lock, but I doubt my extended family on other continents have ever heard of her. They all would have heard of MJ and could sing his songs. Most of us just live and interact with US, White, and White woman dominated spaces so it seems like she's supernova right now.

her broader cultural footprint is also not too significant; she's extremely popular and relevant in the states but she isn't fundamentally changing the trajectory of music or entertainment stylistically in a way that will be remembered years from now, except maybe the business of music

This. The mental gymnastics people employ on CE to try to act like she isnt immensely talented or anything just because they think it might threaten <artist they love> is lulzy. Taylor doesnt throw punches if they dont deserve it so dont worry, she isnt gunning for the legacies of the Beatles or MJ.

no one's insulting Taylor Swift by saying she's not as big as Michael Jackson.

it's not a matter of quality, since we all have different opinions, and there are masterful musicians/artists who will never get the acclaim of either Taylor or Michael.

it's just about numbers, cultural impact, and stuff like that. it's also not a bad thing to come in #5 or 10 when you look at who you're being compared with.

It's probably hard for people who weren't around when he was huge to comprehend. I remember going to Toys R Us as a kid and they had a bin of silver MJ gloves in the center aisle. MJ dolls everywhere. MJ jackets. MJ fan hysteria all over the news, TV specials, in tabloids, etc. He was everywhere.

I only hear about Taylor Swift on CE.

MJ owned a billion dollar music portfolio, to the dismay of Sony, which included The Beatles' discography. I'm sure her networth currently is higher than MJ's at his time of passing, but to own such a portfolio is one helluva win.

That's actually a great point. As big as she's become, i cant think of a single new song of hers. The closest i get is "Shake it off". I'd say her legacy lies in her battle against the recording industry. She really set a new standard there and actually won.

I'd say she essentially is Madonna rather than Michael.
