The idea of sacrifice and helping strangers. Someone who would help a total stranger before their family would be called a pos. But in the back of my mind, I think "Those strangers are people too." Their families all love each other as much as mine. Why should someone's own family be "their own kind" or "their own people" and not all of humanity together?

It feels like it should be right but it comes across as cold hearted. Isn't putting "close" people first a big reason why we have bad cases of tribalism and war? Wouldn't it be better if everyone was willing to do the same things for everyone and help everyone?

It should be right.

I don't disagree with you, but yeah at face value it kind of looks like a betrayal of those you care about or trust.

I think it comes down to you probably won't see said stranger ever again where as helping out family and friends serves another purpose. Builds bonds and whatnot and maybe one day they will be helping you when you need it

You can only spread yourself so thin. The whole concept of humans helping their own family, their own tribe, their own nation, etc. before all else is the result of limited resources.

The idea being, you're responsible for your own family first, and that person's family is responsible for them. If their family failed them, that's not on you.

I don't know why you can't help both, however it sounds more like you're rejecting the right-wing mindset, which is always a positive.

At least in the U.S., right-wingers are emotionally stunted in that they only care about things that hurt people when it hurts people they personally know or themselves. There was some douchebag who quit his job so he could follow around the Trump campaign in 2016 literally singing country songs of praise in Trump's name like some degenerate cultist. During that whole "healthcare" debacle of the GOP where they had 5 failed plans all competing with fucking over Americans the most, he became disillusioned with Trump because one of Trump's plans involved taking away funding from rehab services, and because the dude's son died of an overdose he felt like those services might have been able to save his son and as a result he rejected Trump wholeheartedly.

No doubt there had been times when people had tried to explain why those services are essential for helping other people and he just dismissed the notion because those were strangers and he doesn't give a fuck about strangers. Yet when family became involved, suddenly it was personal and important.

I think it takes a very caring and genuine person to be able to put others before family members because it shows compassion on a grander scale than that which personally affects them. Family is just something you happened to be born into. Ultimately you owe them nothing because of blood and many people have testimonials about how little those ties ultimately meant for them.
