And how long ago was it?

My first place was ~$560/mo and that was for a 1-bedroom, ~1200sqft apartment about a decade ago.

Are you asking how much the unit was, or my share of it?

Wow, everyone must live out in the middle of nowhere. 500-1000 is impossibly cheap wherever I've lived.

Mine was $275 a month for an apartment when I was in high school in 1993. But I live in the Midwest in a heavy rural farming state that has a low cost of living.

For instance even right now today you can get a decent apartment in a college town of about 40,000 people for $700 and that includes free high speed Internet and doesn't charge you for water/garbage. You only have to pay for your utilities which are dirt cheap. It also comes with a community pool and gym and a recreation area and other amenities. That is todays price in April of 2024.

I think the total for the apartment was like $450/mo, so half of that.

This was in 1994, though

All my apartments before I got a house were $700-800 split with one roommate, iirc so $350-400

I never rented, but mortgage was $730 in 2000. You could buy a house then making less than $10 an hour.

I forget exactly, but it was between $500 and $600. It might've been a little under $500. This was in St. Petersburg FL in 2008. Studio apartment.

780/m back in 2005. 1,800 down. My first apartment had 2 bedrooms, 1/2 bath, and a full bath in the hall, first floor, and decent size patio shed (where I unloaded all of my tools daily when I first started doing my own jobs while working full time at a remodel company during the summers). I think I was about to be a senior in high school at the time.

Had a roommate live with me for two years before I moved to a house.

about 1700.

150 of that is a garage I basically don't use except as a guaranteed parking spot, though.

First rental and also probably the only rental I'll make barring a major life change or finally putting away enough to buy a house that I like

Also what's up with landlords that vary the price based on the number of tenants? Our place was 800 for two or 900 for three. Probably like a thousand for four, Iunno.

We actually kinda did have a fourth. I called him sofa guy. Never learned his real name because I never saw him awake. He would always just sorta be there asleep on the sofa when I got home and gone when I woke up. He was a friend of one of the roommates, lol.

About $750 for I think it was like 680 sq. ft back in 2018. It was a big old family house converted into 3 units. That was when I was going to school though.

College apt was like 450 a month, shared common areas, and 2-3 roommates sharing the apt.

Once I left my college town, it was a little over a grand for a single bedroom apt with no roommates. That was 11 yrs ago.

Overall, I'd say I overpaid. The location was decent but the complex itself was old and not super well kept. Only reason I got it is it was literally across the street from the place I got my first job out of college so I saved a fortune in gas money and time in travel.

No. But in some cases, that might make sense, now that you mention it.

It was $1200 for a 630 sq feet, 1 bedroom, 1 bath in LA county. That building was absolutely infested with roaches though, so we moved out as soon as the lease ended. That was back in 2014 with my now ex.

Not counting dorms, I rented a room in a house with I think 4 other students for my senior year of college in 2006. My rent was around $300/month iirc.

To think my wife and I now pay $3700/month for a 2 BR apartment.
