Especially after living at home forever with my parents rent free lol.

In regards to a potential dating life (non existent anyway lol) it also feels like I'm spending $18k to NOT get some lol.

Thats pretty expensive. I pay $7200 in rent a year alone. Thats pretty cheap though and I got lucky.

Living alone and having to pay your own bills is not just about getting laid respectfully. It also helps you emotionally mature as a responsible adult.

I would rather pay $18k a year and live alone than pay $9k with a roommate.

I guess it depends on things like if they're an only child and how much they love them. I'm an only child and my parents never charged me when I lived with them as an adult. My friend is a male middle child between 2 sisters and his parents never made his sisters pay rent, though they did make him pay rent. 400/mo as well oddly enough. They also never helped him with school cause his older sister flunked out and the younger sister is the doted on darling, and he's the only one to finish and get his bachelor's.

Sounds like she wasn't the favorite of her parents.

And when you start fully living independently alone, you quickly start to see how much other random things will crop up into your finances too.

It doesn't take long to live 100% without your parents' help that you start to seriously evaluate stuff like your monthly take-home pay and what exactly you're doing in terms of your physical career.

I had a good relationship with my dad but its weird to me there is so many people here in their 30s and 40s living at home. I couldnt wait to be completely independent. I moved out my senior year of high school into an apartment when I was 17.

Did that for like a year and a half until I left for the Navy. The only time I had roommates was for a brief period in the Navy when I lived off the ship in Virginia Beach for about 1.5 years between two major deployments.

After the military I came home and was back at my dads for a few months. Gave him $300 a month and that was in 1999. About 3 months later I moved to a nice apartment. Lived there 4-5 years until I bought my house in April 2004.

I always wanted to live on my own and again I had a good relationship with my dad. And it was only him and I, and he worked and slept all the time. I was basically alone even when I lived with him. I still wanted to be truly on my own. I actually wanted to move out at 16 when I had my license but I didnt have enough money/earning potential to make two years work so I put it off until 17.

For me, it's student loans. I've already spent over $300k repaying my student loans, and I still have a principal of almost $70k. I make six figures and still can't afford to live on my own.

I do like living with my parents, though.

WTF?

Yeah, I don't think it was really sexist by design, the older sister just squandered opportunities like free rent & paid-for education so the next child got the shit stick, and then the youngest daughter is the "baby" of the 3 who no matter how much she messes up, still finds her way into getting what she wants from parents.

What's dumb is assuming everybody has the ability to pay rent and should feel obligated to if the parents have no issue with it.

Also, my friend who paid the same rent as your wife was making like $11/hr, so I'm glad she did contribute, but also 400/mo from 90k a year is a unique situation in and of itself because who realistically lives in their parent's home when making 90k (At least in the U.S.)? So maybe don't act like she's some standard case everybody else should emulate.

I never said any of that. TC clearly has some money if he could even consider the $18k a year. I was just saying he should at least be covering his expenses. Unless my kids were temporarily destitute, they are not staying with me as adults completely free of charge. Yes, I have kids, but not adults yet.

I was only saying the comments I did because you went down some bullshit path of my wife's parents not loving her much if she had to pay. Like, what is wrong with you?

I rent out a house. My landlord has like 5 properties. This house is worth barely $100k so hes not losing much money nor is he greedy. He has people who work for him with his side construction job that handle repairs for us. Hes trying to save money and make everyone happy. Love the dude. He even brings us $100 for Christmas every year or will just ask for $100 off rent.

If I could cut that in half, let alone negate it entirely, I'd be doing real good lol.
