I could be hella wrong with this but for the top tier stars of their sports, don't they usually get paid alot more in endorsements than their actual contract? Yeah she's getting paid 75k by the WNBA right now but I'm sure that she'll get millions a year on endorsements alone. She'll be fine

Clay, youre fighting a good fight, but like I said before, it took the NBA DECADES to become the juggernaut that it is now.

The NBA Finals was aired on tape delay in the 1970s and early 80s.

One incredible talent will not change the landscape overnight.

Are there max rookie contracts in the WNBA? Is that what she got?

If not, her agents and representatives are to blame. I get that they cant pay her a lot because they dont make any money but she should have gotten a Messi like deal where she gets a piece of the teams revenue.
The WNBA has a rookie scale that her contract adheres to, there's no negotiation involved (at least, I'm pretty sure - the NBA has some wiggle room in that their salary can be anywhere from 80% to 120% of the rookie scale amount, but I don't believe the WNBA has that option). And their CBA certainly doesn't allow just straight up giving a piece of the team's revenue, lol.

She's already reportedly been making about $3M/year in endorsements, and that surely has gone up recently/will go up soon.

Rookie scale contracts in both the NBA and WNBA are determined by your draft position. There's also a maximum salary which is like 120,000 or so.

True. The facts are whoever negotiated the current CBA did a terrible job. But also argued from a place of zero power, considering the money the WNBA generates.

Profits are going to have sustain and keep going up - and probably need a renegotiation of the % that goes to players when their CBA is up (2027 I think) - before we start seeing single season salaries that hit a million. The highest salary this season is about $241k, with the max set at about $264k for 2027.

the wnba gets a new tv deal at the end of 2025 season itll probably hit a million long as this year goes well

We can all agree that she is being underpaid. Hell I make more than her (salary-wise) and I sit in a lab watching graphs. But folks in general have to stop making the comparison between WNBA and NBA wages if they want to be taken seriously.

Steph Curry makes more per game than what Caitlin Clark is making for 4 years
While the contract Caitlin Clark signed is a pittance, please don't do that to her. Steph has been an international superstar sharpshooter for the last decade and has brought untold revenue to the NBA not to talk of his 4 championships. I expect great things from her in the WNBA but comparing her to Steph like that is unfair.

Theres more to it than that. When womens soccer blew up in popularity and became more popular than the men, that didnt give them a pay raise until there were complaints. Right now womens basketball is having a moment but that increase popularity is just going to line owners pockets unless theres similar attention brought to the issue.

And the funny thing is that Curry is a huge reason why sharpshooters like Clark are now allowed to do what they do best which is shoot the basketball at high volume/usage.

One would think the people teaching your children and caring for the sick would make as much or more than someone who plays with a ball.

If Clark can maintain her level of play against professional talent, the WNBA will most certainly blow up in the next 2-5 years. This will definitely mean more $$$ in the long run for the league and players.

I understand why people think like that because it's not an important job in the grand scheme of society but people are paying good money to be entertained by them and if they're not getting paid all that then it's just going to the pockets of the owners and that doesn't sit right with me at all.

Eh

There are reasons this out of control athlete pay happens, and it's not as simple as "just stop paying them as much."

Imagine if all the seats in the arena cost one penny for a game. Naturally, people would scalp them because they're worth more than they cost. The black market is eliminated (or near enough to it in theory) when the seat is priced at the level where everyone who want a seat at the asking price has one. Above the level and you have unsold seats, and below that level you have unseated viewers.

And this same logic applies to every piece of the business, from concessions to merchandise to the players themselves being bought out by a different team for more money.

Blanket equality in pay doesn't work in this situation.
Merely existing doesn't mean a league should pay as much as another.

If the WNBA actually blows up and becomes super popular and pay doesn't go up then it's time to start asking questions.

If they want the WNBA to grow they need to cultivate talent and you cannot cultivate talent with salaries like that. Why would a woman actually put serious effort into becoming great at basketball or some other sport when they'll make the same or more in another field that isn't as hard on their body and doesn't risk potential life time injury?

I'm not saying to pay them what players in the NBA are getting but I mean come on, they're not giving women a reason to really dedicate themselves to sport.

To be fair several WNBA players have said they know that they won't get what the men are being paid. What they want is revenue sharing and a percentage of merch sales.

Which would be fine if the W actually made money, but it doesn't. Hopefully Clark, Brink etc bring more eyes to it so that can happen, but I won't hold my breath.

WNCAA is simply way more popular than the Dub.

There's definitely going to be an uptick in attendance to start the year at least.

This is arguably the most stacked draft class in WNBA history, and that's with Paige Buckets going back for one more run at it. Guys who have never watched a W game in there life were going apeshit for the draft this year.

This is like the outrage around how much the world champion female US football team earns compared to their male counterparts.

It all depends on the revenue each team/league brings in.

If WNBA teams dont generate as much revenue as the NBA teams, theres no way athletes in both will have similar salaries.
