Yeah, I don't get the new discord angle. There were already a bunch of various discords before. I don't really think the chat room style is too comparable to the message board style here.

There is also a forum site that is connected to the Discord

Or you could just join the new forum without joining the Discord

Just wanted to acknowledge we have been reading and gathering the feedback you provided. There have been a number of substantive questions the mod team has jumped in and answered, so thanks to them.

Overall, the main feedback weve received is that the decision to lock the Current Events board and generally prohibit explicitly political topics elsewhere is unpopular amongst a large percentage of commenters. I dont want to duck or run from that takeaway - this is something Fandom discussed and anticipated before making these changes. Ultimately, we will be standing by this decision because doing so aligns with how we operate other parts of our platform, and how we want GameFAQs to be positioned in broad gaming discourse.

I understand that many of you have been contributing to these topics for years and feel as though it has been productive and handled respectfully. We understand that legacy - the CE board is continuing precisely because for the most part, this opinion has been largely true. The CE board is continuing - if you were passionate about contributing there, you can continue to contribute there with the same engaged fellow members youve had.

These changes are about recognizing the internet has changed over the course of the last 20 years and setting the foundation for a better future - political discussion does not make sense as a core driver of conversations on a site dedicated to video games and gameplay. I dont believe if GameFAQs was to be started today, that political topics would be part of the structure of the site.

I do want to caution against some of the slippery slope arguments I have seen in the comments - many of these rules changes are in fact just formalizing informal policies that have existed here. I know, for instance, some of the worst political flame posts have been removed for trolling. Nor is this a precursor for us banning discussion about our identities and passions. Nor is this a sign that Fandom is trying to kill off GameFAQs. We are, after internal discussion and review, making a set of rule changes and board structural tweaks to address some long-standing concerns that have been brought to us. Nothing more, nothing less.

We will work harder to provide direct responses in a timely fashion and will create a part 2 of this topic linked here for any follow up questions or comments.

She wouldn't have lasted anyway since she kept getting modded for "misunderstandings".

It's bullshit either way since the purgatory rule should just not exist since no other locked forum had that happen with it.

Also let's be real here. Most of the people using the Gamefaqs guides are the people who are already using the site. None of the newer generations would come here and make accounts since they would rather watch videos instead of reading something.

With these rules, unless they somehow manage a very clean "your rules but applied fairly" that's subjectively better across many opinions, what incentive exists for new users to come that a place such as reddit does not already accomplish?

From what I've seen, any newcomer comes to gamefaqs for guides on retro/old games that aren't youtube covered. Or they actually like the relatively lax moderation in the gaming/special interest forums.

I love how they keep ducking the questions about the ads they show. They talk about wanting to be inclusive and not offend young kids who visit the site. But bring up the ads that show sex toys and the best they can do is tell you to report it.

That was a Mabus alt, I don't think he even got suspended for that, I saw him posting earlier today I think. Can't remember the name to check though.

This seems like a fairly significant culture change from what Im used to with older chat rooms. It used to be weird to bring up older chats that have come and gone. Has that culture really changed?

also, if you reply to someone from yesterday, wont other people just skip your message since youre not replying to them?

I've never received any pushback for it in the several discords I frequent unless it's something that's been discussed to death constantly or a question every single new user keeps asking despite there being a faq channel and things like that.
I've replied to things that were said to me while offline several days later and just picked up the conversation from there, just like we do here.

Not necessarily, if it's something they want to chime in on, they will.

I haven't really liked chatrooms since the early 2000s. They feel kinda useless unless you can actively pay attention to them and I can't do that. I live a life of instant gratification monkey distractions. As soon as I do one thing I start doing something else. My average day is spent mostly in front of 2 computers and 2 phones.

i've only dabbled with using Discord once before a few years back, and it was kinda weird getting used to using it in this context, interacting with people on it in a different way than i was before, but i'm starting to get more comfortable with it. so far no one's given me any problems with responding to older messages. i think CEpeople are used to others sometimes taking hours to respond to stuff. though i would like to see some channels implemented like in C_Pain's server where it is in message board format. i think they are working on that.

the only thing i don't like is being away from Discord for a couple hours or so and then coming back and there's hundreds of new messages in the general channel. my OCD dictates that i at least skim through everything i missed, so that's a lot of messages to go through. i am probably gonna have to condition myself to just let it go sometimes.

There is no incentive to use the message boards because they don't want people to use them. At a push they want the boards to act as a Q&A feature for people asking things about games. I imagine they will retain that sort of functionality when they get rid of the boards.

It's amazing how everyone from Fandom is just inept in all facets of damage control on any platform they control. There's always just so many ways they could respond better, so many ways they could have implemented more reasonable changes, and so many ways they could actually attempt to improve things. They instead choose the most hamfisted way possible and triple down on it when called out. What I'm mostly curious about is if they're expressing their actual thoughts and opinions, or if they have some Big Dumb Rulebook they have to follow and cannot deviate from.

DToast's "Say fuck DToast, but not fuck Fandom" is a good case for both, so I honestly don't know which one it is

The post about potentially being able to cross link in the future was interesting. I wonder if one potential plan is to merge the wikis and guides / other content from here?

I just got modded for making a topic criticizing Fandom, which is somehow trolling. If that's trolling, half of the responses in those feedback topics are trolling. That's not consistent.

It was just your opinion.
