I still enjoy his videos when it's just him riffing on a movie. But I always skip those horrible skits that he insists on starting half the episodes with.

Yea in like 2009 (Looked up when the suburban commando video was)
But then I jumped off when most did, when he retired the character to do that project or whatever but then came back but inserting his unfunny friends skits into the reviews.

Pitch Meetings does basically everything Nostalgia Critic does but better and in shorter videos.

Not funny per se but I did enjoy the reviews.

Yeah. I remember back when he had to make different youtube videos for each individual video because they'd get taken down for copyright violations. Watched him for a while, then his and most of the TGWTG/CA folks' stuff got old and their videos weren't as good. This was about the time of the third anniversary video. Every now and then I might watch one of Doug's old videos or maybe even a "newer" one I didn't watch as long as it's not one of those that are mostly skits and reenactments.

He was good for a time.

Yeah.

He has the same problem as the Angry Video Game Nerd. Being the whiny critic who uses a bunch of profanity isn't as funny coming from someone in their 40s as it is in their 20s. So, the character has to change. And both hoped to move onto other projects while getting trapped doing what it is that they're best known for. In the case of Nostalgia Critic, there's a problem in that his video have just gotten too damn long. I like a good 15 to 20 minute YouTube video before work. I don't want to devote half an hour or more to them.

That said, Nostalgia Critic sometimes still lands. (As does the Nerd.) I loved his video on The Black Cauldron. They perfectly summed that film up. "Just because nobody likes The Black Cauldron, it doesn't mean that you *don't like* The Black Cauldron." And his video on Stephen King's Sleepwalkers was about as funny as he's ever had. In both cases, modern NC and modern AVGN do better when they're trying to be insightful and reflective rather than recapture their "shit the fuck!" / "no good sack of bitch" days from when they were playing angsty manchildren.

He stopped doing those a while ago. Skits still happen, but they usually take up no more than 5 minutes of a video.

His old vs new videos were my favorites, his funniest vids were neverending story 3, the care bears movies, and felix the cat the movie...

Right. I put newer in quotation marks because to me that's anything past whenever I stopped watching so it's a span of years. I just see a thumbnail on the side I might be interested in and watch it so it could be anything from the past 10 years or so.

He's not really that funny, but I do enjoy his reviews being more "informative" and fair and his willingness to find both the pros and cons to every movie, whether he likes or dislikes a movie, makes me appreciate his shows more. He even admits a lot of the old bad movies he negatively reviewed back then, he strangely starts to find them rather charming. I guess that tends to happen after you negatively reviews stuff over and over again lol.

although i watched his Wall "review" to laugh at how bad it was.

now Angry Joe. That guy was never and will never be funny.

I eem to remember him having a Back to the Future 2 video and you can't find any reference or anything regarding it.

I remember liking some of his older stuff when I was younger, and being legitimately bummed when he decided to quit before the rebrand.

Now that I'm older the whole "ADHD screaming jokes" doesn't work for me anymore but I can't downplay that he did grow for a reason.

Older videos were amusing, but they got a bit tiresome after awhile and I got bored with the skits.

I honestly don't know who that is. The only "content creator" I have ever known or actually followed what they did was AVGN. Started watching when he was Angry Nintendo Nerd and legitimately chuckled at some of the videos since they were about not just the games I played growing up but exact areas of certain games that I remember him pointing out.

It just resonated so much with me because I'm a little over 4 years older than James so we had a somewhat similar timeframe of growing up.

I'm not saying I wouldn't enjoy this person, I just don't know who they are.

I find it odd that any longtime fan of AVGN hasn't at least heard of the Nostalgia Critic. They collabbed a couple times back in the day.

Could just be bad memory on my part then. I don't recall that or recall really taking much note of the other people who appeared in James videos. He also did some work with some other well known video game youtubers over the years that I didn't know who they were.

One was where he actually did it on the rare Nintendo World Championship cartridge. It was some other well known NES youtuber/collector but I couldn't tell you who they were and I never watched them either. There was some others too I think.

They just had a beef for laughs culminating in Nostalgia Critic stepping out of his comfort zone in order to review a bad video game (Bebe's Kids) and AVGN reviewed some low budget movie called Ricky 1. You might have seen that review.

IIRC, Nostalgia Critic also did a review of the AVGN movie, which was a special feature on the DVD for said movie. Doug (NC's real name, used when not playing the character) also cameoed in the movie itself.

Up until To Boldly Flee, he was awesome. NC was on the early internet Mt. Rushmore. Along with AVGN and Spoony.

Honestly I'll have to go look up nostalgia critic. If it is classic movies I like I might enjoy it by the sounds of it if it is a similar vibe to what James was for me on games.

I just image searched him, and he doesn't look familiar even though I'm pretty sure I've seen every AVGN episode.

Yes, he had some classics that I would rewatch from time to time. Tom and Jerry, that cartoon drug PSA, North, Howard the Duck, etc.

I thought he was around 2007 (maybe? I may be thinking of avgn).

I started feeling annoyed when he nitpicked really small things, when he had too many poorly made skits, and when he screamed and did that dumb gun bit. I know it was all an act, but it really grated on me.

The only YouTuber that Ive kept up with for years is Philip DeFranco.

He has apologized for that many times. IIRC, he legit didn't know furries were a thing back then.

I thought his adventure time blogs were all right but iirc they were pretty informal chats and not super produced stuff

I remember liking the actual review parts of his videos, but the comedy was always a miss for me.

Not funny, but found him pleasant and informative, which is more than enough

Never funny, but his nostalgic commercial videos are some of my favorite internet things.

You should check out Vinesauce's Commercial Chaos series (live stream reactions rather than edited videos). There's a lot of wacky stuff out there that wouldn't fit into a 20-minute episode.

didnt care much for those later ones where he made skits that recreated scenes from movies he reviewed. he didnt need to do that... lol

IIRC it was basically him just saying how cool it was that AVGN made a movie and never commented on the quality of said movie

You might be thinking of a different video he did out of character. But he also did a standard NC review.

His humour is completely dumb and juvenile, which I watch him in the first place. I find him a breath of fresh air compared to pretentious video essayists like Lindsay Ellis and her ilk.

I was definitely a fan back in the days. I don't watch his newer stuff too often, but I still quite enjoy his commercial reviews

If you had to choose, would you rather watch a Lindsay Ellis video or sentence all Uyghurs to a concentration camp for 20 years?

His Dough reviews these days are pretty solid and the Dark Toons series is fun.

Nostalgia Critc went to crap when he focused more on the skits and really hit the wall when he did the Pink Floyd The Wall review. The few I catch these days seem to have cut back on that thankfully.

I'm so glad you said that because I've felt that Ryan George is like a better, funnier, more attractive and canadian version of nostalgia critic.
