Even as a hypothetical fantasy.

Given how humans are, if any outside life visits, its us that they should fear, not the other way around.

Unless their tech is FAR better, we would know for several months ahead of time that they'd be on the way. It wouldn't be overnight like in Independance Day. It takes us three days to get to the Moon.

If they can travel from a planet lightyears away in another solar system, I'm sure they could stealth arrive if they wanted to.

The best we could hope for from a benevolent alien race with tech / society advanced enough for interstellar travel is that they treat us they way we treat our dogs and cats. "Aww, aren't you just the cutest little thing...no! Bad human! Racism and attempted coups are NOT allowed in this house! I'm going to have to put the shock collar back on if you don't behave yourself!"

Of course, you're using a very small sample size when you say this. Somewhere out there is the world's strongest rabbit, but it's still gonna get eaten by a standard pooch.

In my old age I have come to believe that the cosmos is so vast that the chance of ever running into other life-even life with highly advanced technology-is very remote.

I think it is very possible that humans destroy ourselves through war, environmental catastrophe, our general selfishness, our general stupidity. I doubt we will be taken out by some outside alien force. We are a grain of sand on an endless beach. The odds of contact seem pretty staggering, even if there is lots of life out there.

Nobody noticed an asteroid that went between the planet and the moon last year until 2 days after it passed. It's very easy to miss those things if they come from daylight direction.

No. But it gives me more time to read actual papers on these kind of subjects instead of getting my info from Independence Day or just gazing at the stars from the tree house I had when I was a kid.

What if it's a scenario where it's like the last generational ship of their species and they're depleted of resources and on the verge of extinction? And they like crash land? There's a conceivable scenario in which we might have the upper hand. It's fun to ponder.

There's a short story out there with the premise that interstellar travel is actually really easy and most civilizations discover it around the time they discover iron working, but humans missed it for some reason and get invaded by aliens with muskets. I'll try to find it.
