No plans to expand? Are they talking about the game itself or their studio...or both?

Studio. Their plan was for a Craftopia 2.0 and now people might expect that they actually leave early access and deliver a finished product.

That makes sense, there's a lot of complications that happen when you expand the studio too fast and without the necessary experience to do so it can end up more of a disaster than working in a more enclosed group. Probably the best they can do is to outsource to contractors for help on updates in the game if they need it.

There's a lot of things they could waste money on if they wanted. Like they could do voice acting for the whole game. That will be like a few million to do every character in both English and Japanese.

So it's an early access, and is admittedly a good framework, but just a framework for an open-world game. They aren't going to expand on this any further? How about developing costs into that and making it a full-fledged release instead of just early access?

It's got more content than a lot of non Early Access games. Hell it's got more content than PLA for half the price.

Their business model seems to have always been "take a popular thing and add base-building mechanics, while doing the bare minimum to make it a functional game", then rinse and repeat. Their next game to be released after Palworld is basically just Hollow Knight but more colorful and with base-building.

They likely never had any intention of seriously developing Palworld much further, but are now caught out by the game's runaway success.

Also, it's pretty interesting to look back at the original Palworld trailers, where the game looked a LOT more colorful and lively, and was clearly taking cues from Genshin Impact at the time.

I hope they massively improve on the base building by the time they reach version 1.0.

I've been playing Enshrouded, which is another early access survival crafting game. The base building there is great. Once you fully upgrade your bases, you can have 8 bases with a huge build areas. Palworld right now, limits you to 3 relatively small bases and the build area never gets larger.

This is the right move. I wish more studios would play it safe after a windfall rather than go all-in on a new gamble as soon as something succeeds, and end up having to do mass layoffs in 2-3 years time.

Is that not a good thing? No need to expand to make profitable games, and now they can afford to support their staff better and have resources to pour into their projects.

I don't see any downside at all to having more money than you need in this case.

The issue for this company is just that they're in over their heads. They never planned on becoming this huge. They started development of Palworld with a team of 4 and planned on finishing the game in less than a year and have it just be a small scale game.

But as development progressed, they realized that the scale was getting too large for their small team and they started expanding. Several of their staff were completely new to the industry. Like the CEO mentioned that one staff was a convenience store worker before that. So when they made the decision to switch from the Unity engine to the Unreal engine, literally only one guy on their team had any experience with the engine, so he had to teach the others. Most of the stuff they were doing, they were learning as they went. Like creating separate animations for the different sized Pals was something they had little experience with (with their previous game, all of the enemies were humanoid, so they could reuse animations).

And on top of all that, the CEO didn't feel it was worth pre-planning the budget. So he was just constantly borrowing money as they needed it. It's really a miracle it turned out how it did. Had this game not exploded in popularity, they would have been millions in debt. They borrowed 1 billion ($6.75 million) to develop the game.
