The foul gave the ball back to Iowa and Caitlin Clark made her first free throw shortly afterwards, after she had been fouled by Paige Bueckers with 3.1 seconds left. Though she missed her second, it gave Iowa a 71-69 lead and, after the teams battled for the ball, the Hawkeyes retained it by having the possession arrow.

Social media went into overdrive after the controversial incident with NBA great James leading the criticism and much of the furore stemming from the call being made so late in the game.

It was never close tho. UConn played their best in the first half and still only led by like 6. Once Clark decided to get serious it was never a ballgame. The final score is misleading.

It was so odd there wasn't an Iowa/UConn thread while the game took place. But better late than never lol.

She was trying to set a screen to prevent the defender from following the person with the ball. In order to do this legally, you have to be set. That means you're standing still and basically bracing for impact. There is a bit of leeway that is typically given with this, but she was nowhere near set. She was actively moving into the defender's path when the collision happened.

This whole dumb convo reminds me of when Kadarius Toney was so clearly off sides and people were like "omg just let them play!"

She would have had to make a contested 3.

I don't like fouls like that, but it's stupid to assume any shot is made and any lead would change hands. If you've watched basketball for very long, especially college, you know how many shots go in and how many shots go out.

It would have been among the GOAT shots of college history if it goes in, assuming Clark doesn't just drain a 3 on the inbounds.

It's clearly a good call, the issue is the timing of the call. With 8 seconds left and the game on the line that's why it's making news. But I've always been a proponent that a foul is a foul no matter what part of the game it happens in.

You can't call the game one way then follow the letter of the law at the ever end. That is like a umb changing this strike zone just when he felt like it.

Just watched it for the first time.

Looked like a play that would be a called a moving screen in the middle of the game, but the refs typically swallow their whistles on stuff like that at the end of the game unless it is super egregious (which this was not).

No not at all. I still think it is questionable. But if that isn't being called in the rest of the game no way should it be called there. Heck going by the letter of the law. When teams are foul at the end of the game. Those should be intentional fouls.

I don't know basket ball rules too well or basketball in general. But would it really have mattered? It's not like uconn got a 2 pointer in after that anyways which would tied the game had Clark not gotten from the free throw. If the score had only ended up being a 1 point difference I could see bitching being warranted.

These kind of things always rely on rampant speculation. What we know is that it was objectively, unambiguously a foul. Ref called it right.

If the foul wasn't called, we delve into the unknown. Maybe UConn scores. Maybe they don't. Even if they do, the best player in the league has at least a few seconds to drain another 3 and take the lead right back. It's more or less pointless to ponder what could have been. Best to stick to facts.

Yeah I have a distaste for basketball cause at a certain time we had to turn tvs off in the prison and I've seen 2.6 seconds last 5 minutes.

It gets tense cause you don't want your OIC yelling at you for not turning the TV off but you don't want to start a situation turning the game off with literally 2 seconds on the clock and it's a close game.

I think people should ref a game one day. I'm sure somethings are happening so fast mistakes get made. You the viewer have a different angle on things.

When I played football. We didn't utilize it but we had been taught some quick dirty tricks that would likely not get noticed by refs cause as said they where quick and often could be seen as unintentional. Like slapping a linemans face mask hard enough it turns his helmet forcing him to readjust it so he can see properly. Which if he does it right away allows you to get by him easier.

Or thr one i liked cause of how stupid it looks. Jab your hands under his shoulder pads and fall backwards he should fall on top of you allowing say the running back to hurdle over yall since now there is a hole in the line.

Exactly. Those sitting at home have the advantage of watching replays and can see the whole field/court. The officials have to make split-second calls and can only see so much since they're there in person and often watching whoever has the ball/puck.

Thought it was funny we had a ref for our football games that was a gym coach for our school. You'd think there would be unfair bias but nope he spent more time harassing the people holding the chain or whatever they use to show where the first down point is. And when he did actually ref he was harsher on our team.

NO ONE should be encouraging others to become refs. You might as well encourage people to become cops with that logic

But more importantly, the screen didn't even do anything. Iowa's defender switched over immediately and was on the ball handler. Still wasn't an open shot, so honestly it probably wouldn't have mattered.

But what does Chuck think?

It was definitely a foul. Whether its a foul that gets called at that point in all games is what people really should be arguing about. I dont see why it wouldnt be called though.
