I dont like soda. Why do waiters judge for getting water? Like is that type of attitude really worth the waiter getting an additional 60 cent tip (20%*$3 for a drink = 60 cents)?

It adds nothing to the bill, and a lot of really cheap people try to make lemonade with it.

I don't know who looks down on it, but I get water because there's no charge to it and also because I don't like all that sugar in my beverage. It's not refreshing to me.

If tip is based off the bill, then water is adding work for the waiter without adding revenue. But the American tip system is a messed up system.

Its one example brah. In college, some co-students literally called me cheap for not ordering a drink and getting free water. Like wtf.

Does this need to be spelled out? Because it's free, it still requires work to bring to the table and refill, and doesn't add to bill which usually doesn't add to their tip.

Waiters also prefer when customers order booze and get refills, as refills cost as much as the original drink.

People you go out to eat with being annoyed at you ordering a drink is dumb, though.

I remember my wife and I went to a restaurant many years back. Neither of us drink alcohol at all so we just each got ourselves a soda as our drink. The table next to us got alcohol. We noticed the waitress gave them considerably more attention than we did to the point to where we were ignored when asking for refills. My wife had to call the restaurant just to get some help with refills.

I basically never order alcohol, and I'm pretty poor so I try to be frugal when I'm eating out. I'll never forget going to a restaurant one time with some friends, ordering water, and having the waitress keep "forgetting" to bring it. (My friends ordered drinks and she brought those, of course.) Then at the end of the meal, when she brought the bill, she said to me: "I guess you didn't need that water, after all, did you?"

I feel like that if people are getting water to avoid paying more they aren't probably planning to tip well in the first place. Some people don't tip by percentage. I tip by service. Great service is at least a 20 in a diner from me. More if its a nicer restaurant but I'm a server so I tend to tip as well as I can.

It's 100% true, and I did leave a very small tip. It's the kind of thing where I think about it in retrospect, and realize I should've left no tip or caused more of a fuss. Instead I just decided to never go to that restaurant again, and I never have.

despite my previous comment, i think the attitude is a bit different in EU than in the US. over there, you need to specifically order "tap water" or else they bring you a bottle. i was at a restaurant in Amsterdam one time and ordered 'tap water' and the server, no joke, literally scoffed at me and goes "... sir, this is a restaurant." i said "uh, i get that and i am ordering food. but i don't need a bottle of fancy water and i am perfectly happy with tap water.' he brought out like a 6oz glass and only gave me one single refill, after asking twice.

I wouldn't say former but I've never seen this as an issue. I usually don't care if they order water. I actually never thought about the correlation to tip. I just assumed they drank water in their household. This makes me feel naive.

I feel like that's more of a European thing. The bastardized Macys' quote "The customer is always right" is something that's ruining America. Also, they don't normally accept tips in other countries so maybe he's just being a snob.

While yes, theres no explicit law that says restaurants must provide free tap water, most counties point to the International Plumbing Code for buildings and establishments to follow. And guess what the IPC requires? Free access to water.
