Sometimes I will for alternate endings, if I'm not burnt out by the end of the game or have something else I want to move on to. I still need to replay Digimon Survive to get the NG+ ending.

Immediately replayed Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered for the new game+ trophies. It was actually pretty fun cause I got to ignore all the side content and skip entire boss phases with Quad Damage and checkpoint abuse.

Depends on the game. Games like Until Dawn and The Quarry have multiple endings that occur depending on whether or not the characters are still alive.

If I'm replaying a game (whether it's the same mode or New Game+ if the game has it), I try to do things a bit different than I did before. For instance, for my regular playthrough on Batman Arkham Knight, I would do the side missions when they became available. On New Game+, I finished the main story, then did the side missions as since the main story ends with Gotham finding out that Bruce Wayne is Batman, some of the dialogue would be different.

Why not play a new game?
That (usually) requires time investment into learning new mechanics, new characters, new stories, that I may not want to bother with. Either due to laziness, disinterest, or life events that might make me hesitant to get involved into something new.

Part of my reason for replaying Crisis Core is cause I made the game too easy by completing all the missions as they became available in the story on my first go so I was insanely overpowered before even the mid-point of the story.

So now I've gotten the Platinum, replayed explicitly for story, and did a couple runs just to see what a challenge would feel like from the game. Which actually worked and has allowed me to become better at the game overall, with a pretty full understanding of enemies and bosses. Actually having to think about how to approach a battle, actually having to take advantage of Materia/Magic that was useless on a run where I was even moderately overleveled. For example, why would I need to Dispel an enemies' Regen or Barrier/Magic Barrier when I can just beat them to death in 3 hits. When you can't do that, you see value in things that otherwise had no value.

I'm not saying you can do this with every game, but it has certainly given me a respect for the combat that I didn't have at first.

There's a bit of a barrier with starting a new game. Modern gaming has like an hour or two of intriduction/in game tutorials before you actually get to do anything. Instead, I will often want to just jump into something immediately and wail on some baddies.

So why not do something else with ones time? Where does the joy out of replaying something you just defeated come from? Gameplay mechanics being fun? New story modes? New character mechanics?

Depends on the game...

There are some games that give you different endings depending on decisions you make within the game (like GTAV and RDR2).

Other times it's a matter of trophy/achievement collecting. For example, Marvels Spiderman 2. I just got a PS5 for Christmas and this was bundled in. I just recently beat it, but there's a few trophies I missed in my initial play though (such as "Stealth takedown 25 enemies in stealth from the Web Line").

So I'm playing it again via NG+ to tie those things up.

When I was younger, like during the NES and Genesis/SNES days, replaying games multiple times was an almost requirement, becasue the "brag" wasn't that you beat the game, but how fast you could be the game, or how many times you "died" before beating the game.

With so many NES games having roots int he arcades, there was a lot of "if you die, you have to start from square 1" so once the game was beat, the challenge then became how "easily" you could beat it.

Being the first kid on my class to beat Contra without having to use the Konami Code is something I jokingly brag about to my friends today.

With there being no real was to "lose" a game nowadays, it has become a lost art to most people other than speed runners.

I dunno, everyone stops at different places. The credits are just a cutscene. Some people go for the post game, some don't. Some people go for NG+, some don't. Some people boot it up again and just run around goofing off, some don't. Some people start another playthrough, some don't.

I guess the real question here is why do you choose the point where you stop, and I think it's as valid a question for TC as for anyone else.

If I played a game loved it don't want it o be over I might. I played tales of vesperia 3 times in a row. I've done OoT 3 times in a row. And I'm about to play ghost of tsushima for a second time in a row. (Third over all play though)

But normally no unless it's like a nes game that's short. Like I lost count how many times I played through castlevania 1 in a row.

I do for all the various reasons already listed in this topic.

First time I can recall doing it was with Final Fantasy 8 as an 11 year old. I had spend so much time in this world and with those characters I just didn't want to leave yet. Felt like saying goodbye to close friends at that point which is something I also used to experience when reading a really good book.
I don't get that feeling anymore likely due to mass media consumption, but almost every ending used to be bittersweet for me as a child. It felt great accomplishing my set goal, but at the same time it meant that now it was all over and that made me sad.

Oh ok. Not just stats though, you get to keep all the unlocked costumes as well which was the main reason why I went through it again. Put all that effort into unlocking and upgrading every character's alternate costumes and then the game just ends having barely used a bunch of characters and costumes.

Ultimaye Alliance is a perfect example of a franchise that downgraded with each new entry.

The 2nd game placed emphasis on story cut scenes more so than gameplay. The roster was a significant downgrade. There were less costumes, less villains, and in general less shit to do.

The 3rd was absent of unique dialogue which made replaying the thing a chore. Also they didnt put nearly enough villains or enemy types in the game.

The first one had a near perfect roster, repeatability, and really tossed you into the comicbook world the worlds were in point, and you learned about the lore of the different characters as you progressed.

Yeah I think OoT is the only one with no new game+ I've done it with. It was the most epic game I played at that point in my life then later as an adult I did 3 plays back to back. First was normally second I did it in one sitting and third I did a no shield run

The last one was fun as hell to me. Basically I'd get a shield if absolutely necessary like one particular boss but then if immediately go get my hylian shield ate asap after. It made so the back flip and side hops actually where needed for some combat like lifalzos

There was a scene in Batman TAS where Batman explains that he's not invincible like people think he is and every night he goes out he knows he could die. "It could be the Riddler, or Two-Face, or just some punk who gets lucky."

I was absurdly good at those games, so my I am the Night playthrough on Hard, I only cheesed the Copperhead fight in this way, with "restart from checkpoint" when I would get low.

But then, almost at the end of the game, I'm talking the bridge dungeon, I screwed up and completely didn't see the guy with the shotgun.

That Batman quote had never felt so real.

I actually like the replays often more than the initial experience. In the initial experience, your run often is a bit discombobulated and poorly executed, whereas on replay you are like Seal Team 6, a well oiled machine: you know what exactly to do and feel like a rockstar. Although, I suppose it is a bit of personality thing: the experiencer vs. the perfecter.
