If it were currently possible to have the form factor of a Switch with PS5's power, the PS5 Slim would have been much smaller, and the Steam Deck and the Steam Deck alternatives all would have be more powerful.

It won't even match an Xbox One X at this point. Maybe barely beats a steam deck.

If it has good games like the Switch does, I don't really care about the power.

Honestly, graphics shouldnt really matter anymore. Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart, they all look great.

Sure, FF7Rebirth has nice effects and lighting, but not every game needs to be that way.

Just as long as it doesnt look as gross as Pokemon or Xenoblade 2/3

We already know the SoC it'll use. It's gonna be roughly on-par with a PS4 Pro but with DLSS being the ace up its sleeve.

Why do you think it works that way?

The Switch has consistently outperformed every other console on the market for around the last 6 years. They will retire the switch when its dead.

disregarding you're asking for a portable brick that has 2 hours battery life, nintendo have never prioritised matching other consoles hardware specs. they march to the beat of their own drum and it works for them. if you want a portable ps5, then get a ps5 and use remote play.

I mean there's already the steamdeck for one thing. If dorks want a high powered portable device, there you go. That's the answer.

Has Nintendo ever led the pack in performance/graphics?

Besides with today's battery tech you'd get like 2 hours out of a AAA title just like the Deck's competitors that have higher specs.

No, I don't think it ever has. The SNES was pretty but I think the Genesis was still better in performance? Or that's what everyone was screaming at that time.

I don't think it matters though. The Switch puts a lot more focus on their first party library which runs smoothly for the most part. Its also pretty so its not like you need to go full on extreme in graphics. The issue is that you have trouble porting to it but I never buy a Nintendo console for the third party games.

But the Switch is good hardware, tho? You place too much stock on the technical specifications of the hardware and not what it is offering to you as a consumer.

The next Nintendo console should be a normal freaking console that has power close enough to PS5 that it can get 3rd party games.
Switch can be the lower powered handheld console since they ended the 3DS.
Their own first party games can be released to both consoles for the most part since they aren't that demanding graphically or maybe have better graphics on the new console but playable on either.

But it's Nintendo, they'll probably just reinvent the wheel for no good reason, or make a literal Switch 2 that's the same as Switch 1 but marginally more powerful. -_-

I assume you mean "high-end performance" hardware. And that's because the last time they did, the GCN sold so poorly they had to stop manufacturing it for a while and drop the price to $99. They figured out from the PS2, which only sold like crazy because it was an early, cheap DVD player, that high-end hardware doesn't move consoles, it's what the hardware can do for you. That, and compared to Sony and MS, Nintendo doesn't sell their consoles at a loss. Although I'm not sure about the Switch and whatnot.

Gamecube. I think the under-the-hood XBox was technically better, but you wouldn't know it. RE4 and the Metroid Primes were by and far the peak performances games from that gen, with Halo somewhere in their.

Theres barely a market for two consoles that do the exact same thing, why would we need another one?

keeping it lower power in favor of it being handheld is a good move imo

Nintendo doesn't give their consoles more powerful hardware because they don't need to. The Switch has sold almost 140 million units and unlike Sony and MS who sell their hardware at a loss (at least at first) Nintendo never did that with Switch so they didn't have to lose money on hardware sales to get that install base.

Would the Switch have sold even better if it had more powerful hardware for the same price? Maybe so but even if it would have those extra sales probably wouldn't have been enough to offset the additional manufacturing costs they would have incurred.

GameCube didn't sell as much as they wanted, but the Wii sold super well. They figured out they didn't need to care about graphical power since that's not what sells for them.
