I mean ai can get away with it...
before covid and ai I was obsessed with an amateur artist's style and now I can make similar looking designs. but one of my designs really borrowed heavily. they are so good with placement.

It certainly brings it into focus, especially around the extent to which using existing art to learn how to make art is "theft" vs "training" when comparing a machine doing it vs a person doing it.

I definitely think it's a discussion worth having. But you have a number of boomer-cringe type people who are just very anti-AI that make it difficult to have these discussionsd

No and it never will. Those people who mimic other art styles actually took the time to practice and inform folks that they are not the same person. Mimicking other folks art styles is such a fashion is such a cheap way to try and milk fame for stupid reasons.

Who said AI can get away with it? Even purely in terms of legality that's an ongoing court battle.

you had to actually practice and learn how to do that and your talent as an artist developed because of it.

an ai doesn't develop talent, it just takes passes until the unacceptable ones are weeded out, and while it's doing that it is likely encroaching on spaces for artists that artists have used to launch careers.

Don't worry TC, your corporate tech overlords will be okay without people defending the outright theft of the ingenuity and creativity of individual human artists, they already get to exploit the labor and profit endlessly from the work of those artists now... with AI you can just eliminate underpaying them and steal the essence of their work with sophisticated software.

You don't need justification, if you want to do it, do it.

All art borrows from a plethora of influences. It's always been justifiable. Whether or not the result is interesting is a separate question, and ai art is currently really bad.

AI using someone's art style to create something is different, because it literally analyzes the art style in a mathematical sense and regurgitates it based on an algorithm. It's not "learning," it's just doing a math problem. It has no way of knowing what it actually outputs; it's not creating art. That's why it messes up fingers, body continuity, etc.

Because it doesn't actually know what it's creating, it just knows which words are associated with which general shapes. Those shapes have a high chance of being nonsense, which is why you have to go through like 30 generations to make anything that actually looks right. It's just splattering keywords onto the page until it accidentally gets it right.

It butchered the joke though which is the whole point of the art. AI is NOT ready.
