The first weekend of the inaugural (sort of) season of the UFL starts today with a meeting of the two champions of last season from both pre-merger leagues, the USFL champion Birmingham Stallions and the XFL champion Arlington Renegades. Then later today, my hometown St. Louis Battlehawks take on the Michigan Panthers. Both games today are on FOX, and both games tomorrow are on ESPN.

Who's ready for some football?

I still don't understand how 2 leagues merged and now they have less teams than before

I just dont have the bandwidth to add another sport to my life. i already struggle to keep up with the 4 major sports + WWE.

no its just a league that was filling the void the nfl makes when they are off people love football they want more of it

They wanted to start with an even 8 teams for financial reasons, so they cut out some of the redundant or less popular teams from the previous leagues. It ended up being 5 XFL teams and 3 USFL teams that made the cut in the new UFL, but they do hope to expand to 10 or 12 teams in the future.

I liked the Sea Dragons too. Aside from my hometown Battlehawks, they were basically my second-favorite team from the XFL. If the UFL does well and they expand, I hope Seattle is one of the cities chosen for a team and they get the Sea Dragons back.

The XFL (2020 edition) was actually doing pretty well for spring football until it got smothered in its crib by COVID.

Tied at 11 at the half. Pretty good game so far.

The only thing that's fucking dumb about this league is that THREE out of eight teams are from Texas. With that said, GO DC DEFENDERS

3-0 Battlehawks at the half, very defensive game so far.

Un-fucking-believable. The Michigan Panthers win a nail-biter of a game, 18-16, thanks to a 64-yard field goal by kicker Jake Bates. I'm not even mad. That kick was amazing and this game was amazing. What a way for the UFL to burst back on the scene.

What happened with the combining it with CFL? Did that fall through?

I don't think that was ever a serious consideration to begin with. That was more of a longshot that was possible but very unlikely.

Jesus, they can't even fill up the Choctaw. This is going to be a bad season if the first week is like this. For non-Texas residents, The Choctaw was the stadium for the Rangers until Globe Life was built. One of the main complaints was the lack of seating. Now it just hosts High School football games.

I was looking at the team names. The Showboats is unique and makes me chuckle. The Brahmas are obvious why they exist but they really have a team called the Panthers? So generic by this point. Might as well just call them the Animals.

Can't wait to see the Defenders destroy at noon. My parent's easter lunch should be good and ready by then!

Monotone announcer voice: "They did not." Anyways, the last game of the weekend is on now. The Memphis Showboats are beating the Houston Roughnecks.

I did learn something today though: I was technically wrong about the whole "5 XFL teams and 3 USFL teams" thing. The Houston Roughnecks in this new UFL are actually just the Houston Gamblers from the USFL (same coaching staff and mostly the same roster) re-branded using the name and logo of the Houston Roughnecks from the XFL. So in reality, it's actually 4 teams from each league that survived the merge.

A chunk of the former UFL teams are lifted from the original version of the team for tradition.

Here's hoping for a home game for St. Louis. They always sold pretty well along with Seattle, but the Sea Dragons aren't here this season.

I heard their home opener against the Renegades next week is basically sold out.

The Showboats beat the Renegades in a close game, 18-12, to cap off the first weekend of the UFL season. I thought it was pretty solid overall, with the Panthers/Battlehawks game on Saturday definitely being the highlight of the weekend. I don't know if I'll be able to watch all 4 games every weekend like I did this weekend, but I'll definitely watch every Battlehawks game since they're my home team.
