you'd think there'd be some legislation to protect us consumers against shit like Microsoft is currently trying to pull along with other companies.

I hate to admit that I own 70+ digital games and knowing one day I can lose access to them for some arbitrary reason makes me sick.

This is why I will never pay full price for a digital game or even a physical copy because even with those you still don't actually own the game, it's a license/key and nothing more.

Check out Ross Scott's YouTube Channel "Accursed Farms" and his Dead Game News series.

Ross is currently attempting to find various legal means and methods to prevent companies from killing games through the games as a service model.

Currently he is soliciting help and setting up resources to see if they can stop Ubisoft's "The Crew" from being taken away and rendered unplayable - as this is one of the earliest and most egregious cases of a "games as a service" about to go away.

Just search Accursed Farms or Dead Game News on YouTube.

Such simple solutions!

Lots of bangers that release digital only eventually get a physical release.

The only digital games Ill buy are live server games since they will die out eventually. Like Helldivers 2 being my most recent digital purchase.

  • Physical media over digital distribution. The latter is a necessary evil with indie titles but if physical is an option take it.
  • Play offline games, if you play online that opens up a can of worms on rights ownership and opens the door for always online bullshit.
  • Fight back against companies having single player modes be always online. There's no good reason for that.
  • Embargo gamepass and streaming services. While they aren't exactly new the threat of them taking over is.

Realistically, there is no 'fighting back'. The future of games is digital downloads/streaming.
That said, I never buy digital games at full price, and I have a pretty beefy library of physical games that I'm always adding to.

Just buy your games on PC? Nobody to my knowledge has ever lost a copy of a digital game, or if its happened, its exceedingly rare. Tons of games get removed from Steam for various reasons, like licensing agreements running out etc. or them removing the original when they do remasters like Capcom recently did with the DMC games, etc.

But if you own the games already you can still download and play them. They just remove it from sale so the only way you can buy a copy is buying a key on the secondary market from G2A etc., the same way you can only buy out-of-print physical games by paying exorbitant prices on the secondary market for them.

If they do take a game you legally bought, just pirate it as youre on PC.

You can also backup a Steam or GOG copy to a local server or NAS if youre exceedingly paranoid.

The actual risk is games like The Crew, where you dont actually lose the copy, but the copy becomes worthless because they turned the servers off. But that affects physical copies too as far as I know.

Its wild how much this has spread nowadays.

Yeah, it is true that certain games like that one call of duty game makes you download all of it's data off it's server, and obviously the online-only games like outriders for example won't contain all of it's data on the disc.

Vast majority of stuff out there, take resident evil 4 remake, FF7 remake, demon's souls PS5, ratchet and clank a rift apart, etc. etc., all that stuff is on the disc already. Unplug the PS5 from the internet and it'd install the game just fine. (With the PS5 if you have it connected to the internet, it will download a portion of the game off the PSN servers and a portion off the disc to speed up the installation).

Provide a single example of someone who purchased a game on Steam actually losing that copy, rather than it just being removed from the store so people who dont own it already cant purchase it. Ive got over 1000 games, havent lost access to a single one removed from the store that I owned already.

That doesnt at all say what the title suggests. Nobody is losing their Steam library. Luddites and tech-illiterates are being forced to stop using antiquated operating systems.

Nobody is losing their Steam library drama queen. Losing access to your library until you upgrade to an OS that isn't ancient and losing your library are two very different things. Try reading beyond the title next time.
The company announced in a recent blog post that Steam will cease to support legacy Windows systems such as Windows 7, Windows 8, and Windows 8.1.

As of January 1 2024, Steam will officially stop supporting the Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. After that date, the Steam Client will no longer run on those versions of Windows. In order to continue running Steam and any games or other products purchased through Steam, users will need to update to a more recent version of Windows.

The reason for the update is due to the client's reliance on "an embedded version of Google Chrome". However, because this embedded version of Google Chrome no longer functions on earlier versions of Windows, the Steam Client will no longer function. Not only that, but future versions of the client will require different Windows features and security updates that are only accessible for Windows 10 and higher.

Although support will stop in 2024, Valve strongly encourages users to upgrade to the latest Windows operating system.
No where in there or in that blog post does Valve say "You will lose your Steam library if you don't upgrade your operating system." The library isn't going anywhere. It will be there when you upgrade whether it takes 2 months or 20 years.
