I was more responding to the idea that the localizers "made it up." The plain text of the manual had Bowser calling them his children, using a term that almost always means your literal child.

I'm not trying to argue that they're his children now or anything. Nintendo has declared them not to be, and I accept that.

Bowser never learned how to talk to people his own age. Only children will put up with his awkward weirdo bullshit. It's why he has to abduct women instead of asking them to go get coffee or something.

No, they really did refer to them explicitly as Bowsers children in Japanese material for SMB3 and SMW.

Sometimes localizers make things up, but not in this case. Its simply a retcon.

While musuko does mean son, it doesn't always carry the connotation of a relative. It can also just mean a young boy. Like I see musume used to mean girl all the time across various Japanese media.

That has since been retconned, and now Cranky is DK's father rather than grandfather.

Koopa children who were radicalized by Bowser into joining his Koopa Troop to forcibly annex the rest of the world, usually starting with the Mushroom Kingdom, and who then ended up proving themselves more capable than most of their fellows by the time Bowser started going around attacking the various kings in Super Mario Bros. 3 (knowing full well that their antics were a diversion to draw Mario and Luigi away from home and leaving Princess Peach unguarded).

Honestly, that's how it should have been when Country came out. I think Nintendo didn't go along with it since it was Rare's game though. They didn't want anything to do with Country and it was annoying.

There was a story at one point that Wolverine had an affair with Magneto's wife and that Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were Wolverine's kids and not Magneto's. Not sure of the specific details (might not have been in the main Marvel universe/timeline), but yeah... Maybe someone else can elaborate more.

I'll go further and say that the "Wanda and Quicksilver were never Magneto's kids" retcon was another in-universe effect of Wanda's "No more mutants" reality-warp at the end of House of M, rewriting her and Pietro's history to make them Maximoffs by birth rather than Magneto's kids (and thus, not mutants). Later writers basically ignoring the mandate and treating Magneto as still being their father is their true history attempting to re-assert itself.

They may have just spawned via stork delivery, same and Mario, Luigi and maybe peach from the yoshis islands games. So they technically dont have parents.

That or Bowser simply adapted them.

As a kid I always thought Bowser was the Koopalings' uncle... no idea where the fuck I got that idea from. I remember thinking I read it somewhere when I first learned they were actually his kids but I couldn't tell ya where.

I think the current canon is that DK Jr. is the current DK's father, and Cranky is now DK's grandfather. Presumably, DK Jr. died defending his home island some years after his final appearance in Mario Tennis, but had sired DK shortly before, thus enabling his bloodline to continue as was seen in the Donkey Kong Country games and 64, as well as modern Mario spinoffs that include Rare-era DK characters.

The Koopalings are just groupies wanting to ride on Bowser's.....

Are you sure about that?

I used to study Japanese, including living in Japan for two years (admittedly, I was quite shy at the time so my speaking skills suffered), and I don't remember ever hearing musuko used to mean boy. Musume as girl? All the time. Definitely a thing. But musuko always meant son whenever I heard it.

But maybe I'm wrong. It has been a while since my Japanese studies were more than just watching subbed anime. So I looked up some Japanese/English dictionaries, but it seems to be as I remember. Musume can mean daughter or girl, but musuko just means son (ignoring the slang usage to mean penis).

I admit I might be missing some subtlety in the language, but unless someone better at Japanese comes in and tells me I'm mistaken I'm standing by my reading of SMB3's Japanese manual. Maybe you're fluent in it and I've been making a fool of myself, but I'm fairly confident on this one.
