This. I have a soft spot in my heart for 3 since I loved it when I was a kid, but the rest after are bad to acceptable but still not great.

Prometheus was alright and a promising setup but they shit that bed.

Alien and Aliens are still incredible movies, I watched them both for the first time a couple years ago and believe me they have not aged poorly at all.

I have not watched anything after Aliens.

I watched through the whole Alien series this year, and then circled back and watched all of the Predator movies. I 100% recommend Alien through Alien Resurrection. Prometheus and Covenant: they have extremely fascinating premises but fail to deliver on what could have been really deep themes. As a result they end up just being vehicles for events happening and people dying and it's not that interesting.

For the Predator movies, I would recommend Predator, Predator 2, Alien vs. Predator, and Prey.

Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem was too dark, had a completely different tone than the original, and didn't really do anything to contribute to the world. Predators had a few good action sequences and plot twists to it but overall it was just a really bland idea - random people who you never really care too much about end up on a planet being hunted by Predators and they're just trying to survive. And The Predator was a borderline family drama with generic and awful "commentary" about the military, and way too much terrible comedy to take seriously. It has Keegan-Michael Key in it, I think that probably says enough (I like the guy for the most part but he's a comedian and... he's basically just telling jokes the whole movie.

The first Predator is a classic and one of the best action movies ever in my opinion. Predator 2 is generally favored, but not nearly as good as the first. I enjoyed it and would definitely recommend. And then the latest one, Prey, is very good.

Predators is a fairly generic action movie and The Predator is an absolute mess. You'd probably be okay skipping those. The bad Alien movies are at least thought-provoking or explore interesting concepts. These two are just plain bad and don't really add anything of value to the concept of the Predator.

As for the AVP movies, the first one isn't very good, but it's worth watching for the novelty factor alone. The second AVP is pretty awful though.

Nah, 2 is legit good. It just had the misfortune of following 1. All the Predator movies, sans The Predator are worth watching. Even The Predator is "worth" watching if you're drinking with friends, cause it's dog shit and fun to make fun of.

Prey was so damn good. Normally I'm rather meh about movies that have relatively singular settings with minimal visual variety, and also meh about movies that generally have a slow pace, but something about Prey just felt very natural, even dreamy at times.

3 isnt that good and Resurrection has issues but I find people go a bit overboard with suggesting you should only watch 1 and 2. It wholly depends on the what you like in said movies, if you are into the lore Prometheus especially and Covenant are worth a watch too, and its not like watching them all will take weeks of your life. Id even say there is enough extended material worth checking out too, even a few of the TTRPG campaigns have interesting stories, for example Heart of Darkness.

3 is a tough watch because.... you spent 1 and 2 getting to know and like Ripley only for them to kill her off at the end of 3 and you spent all of 2 liking the dynamic between Ripley and Newt/Hicks only for them to be killed off literally before 3 even starts.

Resurrection is just.. a bad weird movie. The cloning and the alien hybrid are both just... weird and stupid. Fun cast of characters though which saves it a little. If someone liked the first 2 I'd say give 3 and 4 a watch.

That said though... at least there isn't anything that just completely butt fucks the lore and doesn't make sense like with Prometheus and Covenant. I almost wish Ridley would have been able to finish his trilogy, just to see what next lame shit he could pull from his ass and how he could write newer even dumber characters.
