Five times the size of Paris. Visible from space. The worlds biggest energy plant. Enough electricity to power Switzerland.

The scale of the project transforming swathes of barren salt desert on the edge of western India into one of the most important sources of clean energy anywhere on the planet is so overwhelming that the man in charge cant keep up.

I dont even do the math any more, Sagar Adani told CNN in an interview last week.

Adani is executive director of Adani Green Energy Limited (AGEL). Hes also the nephew of Gautam Adani, Asias second richest man, whose $100 billion fortune stems from the Adani Group, Indias biggest coal importer and a leading miner of the dirty fuel. Founded in 1988, the conglomerate has businesses in fields ranging from ports and thermal power plants to media and cements.

Its clean energy unit AGEL is building the sprawling solar and wind power plant in the western Indian state of Gujarat at a cost of about $20 billion. It will be the worlds biggest renewable park when it is finished in about five years, and should generate enough clean electricity to power 16 million Indian homes.

The success of the Khavda Renewable Energy Park is critical to Indias efforts to reduce pollution and hit its climate goals while meeting the burgeoning energy needs of the worlds most populous nation and fastest-growing major economy. Coal still accounts for 70% of the electricity India generates.

Oh hey look, how billionaires should actually spend their fortunes, instead of (completely random example here) buying one of the biggest social media platforms in the world and wholeheartedly turning it over to bigots and racists while touting "free speech".

Ted Turner owns 2 million acres in America that he's kept basically as a wildlife sanctuary. It's not the greatest use of his money IMO, but I have serious concerns about what's going to happen to his land when he dies.

Is this the part where we say "All Billionaires are Bad" or can this be a lesson to not generalize and take things (and people) on a case by case basis?

This just then becomes are circle argument, because the question then becomes "What amount is when it becomes 'too much money'?"

Is it a Billion? Is it 10 Million? Is it $100 Million?

There was a topic about this one. Taylor Swift is apparently the exception.

It's a very bad thing for society that someone could get so rich by doing something so harmful, then use those ill gotten gains to launder their reputation by doing something like this. It's still letting the people who wrecked everything knowingly direct absurd amounts of economic resources and make/influence political decisions.

That's not to say I hope it fails, but this is still a symptom of the same disease, even if it has genuinely positive results. In a different system, decisions about power production and usage could have been made in a scientifically informed and democratic way, this guy wouldn't have polluted in the first place, and wouldn't have had the resources to do this or the opposite of this.

It's so weird seeing a billionaire actually do what so many have said we wished they'd do. Them doing this with the profits from coal is a nice detail because it feel like someone in the family trying to right a wrong.

Visible from Space

So we've finally reached that point of humanity, I see.

16 million homes in India is like 5% of the number of households there >_>

Also India is already becoming too hot to live in so who knows what this place is gonna be like in 15-20 years
