I think the cactuar is well known even by normal game culture online, but I voted Chocobo. Unless it's just the many Cids, chocobo seems a safe bet.

In seriousness, it's easily the chocobo. Unless FF13-16 gave them a major resurgence, moogles hit their peak relevance with FF6. Chocobos getting a dedicated theme song that has endured through multiple game entries is all the evidence you need.

Well, the 13 Trilogy gave us moogles with quite a bit of voice acting. Plus FF16 has a super cute moogle running the bounty board.

Don't get me wrong, I wish moogles were the de facto mascot over chocobos; moogles were my favorite as a kid, and are still my second-favorite recurring critters after tonberries. But chocobos have (to my knowledge, please correct me if I'm wrong) appeared with more-or-less equal prominence in every numbered entry, have a dedicated racing game under their belt, and have a recurring musical theme right up there in familiarity with the Prelude and Victory Fanfare. Sadly I don't think moogles can match that.

It's not just about who's been in the most games, though. You have to have actually played a FF game to know who/what a moogle or a chocobo is. Black mages have been major characters, have been used in marketing, have been on the covers of numbered games, have been put into crossovers, etc.

It's possible I'm just missing some stuff but chocos and moogles don't have that factor. At least, not to the same level. There's mog and Mont Blanc, I guess. And... Boko?
