I think they might be referring to the refresh rate. I remember it did look different, but not unreal. It had kind of a soap opera effect if that makes sense.

My first experience with HD was Fallout 3 in 2009. SDTV was too hard to play it on due to the small text, so I went and bought an HD monitor (pretty decent Dell 23" for just under $200 IIRC).
