Its already been stated but let me add another to the I doubt the boards are around for more than a couple more years.

This place is a relic and a shell of what it once was. Not worth the hassle of keeping the boards working. Shut them down and this site will just be an archive for old game guides.

The authorities of Gamefaqs have been making wrong decisions one after another for nearly 20 years. In retrospect I'm surprised the site has lasted as long as it has.

I wont be making it to 70 either, and good thing too. Being that age already sucks, but it will be much worse given the state of the climate and living standards by then.

This site is a fossil of the internet, it bled users hard, its annoying to use and post on, its not getting new blood and people leave all the time. At a certain point its not worth keeping up and thats going to be sooner than later.

They aren't. It's the same guessing game people have been playing for almost two decades.

I started posting on CE in 2006, and when CJayC left the following year people were guessing that the site would end by the end of that year.

It's funny how one's perspectives change over time. As a kid I would think that people in their 30's were old, and that it'd be terrible once I hit 40. Then I turned 30 and I'd sometimes think how bad would it be to be 60. Now I'm in my 50's and I think 70 isn't all that far away.

I can definitely agree with this. I used to think 60+ meant old age and wrinkly, but now that my mother is 70 and still not wrinkly at all Im realizing that its closer to middle age.

The chance of me still being around at that age is fairly low, and the chance of GameFAQs still being around when I'm that age is even lower. If both those things do somehow happen, chances are I'll still pop in at least occasionally.

We barely crack 1000 total uses on the boards these days during peak times and it's been a steady decline. I truly do think we're at a point where the numbers may not justify keeping it open.

Not necessarily now, but that stuff snowballs and at a certain point its just going to be a graveyard. There was a period where I didnt post actively or at all here for like 10-15 years, I came back for the heck of it but many wont.

GameFAQs has essentially been passed from corporation to corporation. Eventually, one expects an owner to look for things to cut and these boards may be on the chopping block. I'm not too sure they will do that because the social boards are really just a small part of GameFAQs.

Most boards are video game related and having an always active forum for games essentially allows users to post free info about the game to raise the sites profile. This is especially important since actual game guides are posted way less than they were in the past. GameFAQs is nowhere as popular as its peak the cost of hosting the site is likely way less than most sites because its mostly text based. GameFAQs also shows up surprisingly frequently in web searches because most people use closed gardens now that are not really browseable by search engines (i.e. Tiktok and Facekbook).

I do think the 2024 election is the biggest near future chance of the social boards closing down since "controversy" has caused other websites to close boards.

It's possible. Didn't the MAGA board get shut down because they were cheering on the Jan 6 terrorists? That was without Fandom at the helm, and since after they took over they didn't even let the politics board continue to exist at all, it's quite possible they will disable the boards around November to save the hassle of having to ban so many people.

Long story short, we've been through two Trump elections without Fandom and those were bad enough. The next one's going to be even worse, and with Fandom in the picture. The past cannot represent an indicator of the future at that point.
