Twin sisters were attacked inside a Brooklyn deli early Sunday morning by a man who, police sources say, tried to flirt with them. One was killed and the other was injured. Police have launched a manhunt for the person responsible. "It's horrible. It's sad. It's very sad," Miriam Ortiz said. Ortiz was among those to visit a growing memorial outside the home of 19-year-old Samyia Spain, who died after being stabbed twice at around 2:30 a.m. inside a deli on 4th Avenue and St. Mark's Place in Park Slope. Her twin sister was stabbed in the arm.

A witness, who did not want to be identified, said the twin sisters were attacked because they refused a stranger's advances. "One of them guys complemented two girls, walked in with their friends, and they said, no, we're not attracted so he called them names. They called him names back. He walked out. He walked down the block angry," the witness said. The witness said the man then came back to the deli and things took a turn for the worse. "He's banging on the door. They lock the door. Then he walked away again. So they unlocked the door so everyone can leave. So the second they open the door, he ran back into the door and started attacking them," the witness said. A worker at the deli said the twins had been coming there for years. "They're very nice. I know their father, too. They come here all the time, customers for maybe over, I would say, over 10 years I know them," Mohammed Alba said. "Take somebody else's life, a young lady, 19 years old, a beautiful girl." The witness said the man and his friends were intoxicated and ran off after the attack. So far, no arrests have been made.

This is really doing a number on me after reading The Gift of Fear yesterday.

Fucking hell. Lock that lunatic up for life. I feel so bad for the family and especially the twin that survived. I hope she doesn't get survivors guilt over losing her twin like that.

Glad I'm not the only one to recognize that poster's gimmick.

Putting this particular case aside, as I have no right to comment on it, I've spent the past year and a half going through the legal system and I've been exposed to the fact that criminal behavior is largely not due to people being "pieces of shit who need to be tossed out." There are many pieces to a puzzle, and luckily the professionals know better than the average useless layperson who unfortunately wields the misguided power of the vote.

This is extremely sad to hear.

My wife had an issue nearly a year and a half ago when she came to get me from a sleep study (I was not allowed to drive due to meds I was on for it and she was visiting family). The issue was when she got onto the freeway a car started following her and would change lanes with her when she tried to get away. I told her to get off at our exit and go straight to the police station. The guy followed her off the exit. She proceeded to run red lights (it was 5AM on a Saturday) and he did too. She got to the police station and the guy boxed her in. She hit the horn repeatedly and the police came out. The guy was mentally unstable and said (his words) "the voices in his head told him to follow my wife's car because it would take him where needed to go (like a promised land if ai remember right). Since then, I have encouraged her to take karate lessons to help with defending herself.

They did try to protect these women, to be fair. They locked the guy out of the deli and then once they thought he was gone, they unlocked the doors so they could go home. I don't they were expecting the guy to ambush them as soon as the doors opened.

And if it escalates to violence before the cops arrive? These are cops we are talking about here. Cops who have no legal duty to protect anyone. I'd rather rely on myself to deal with the situation.

No one is obligated to be a hero. Whatever it's trying to put out a major fire or stop a violent person.

That's not to say just look the other way, but not everyone is young and spry enough to jump into a dangerous scenario unharmed.

The man and his buddies are at fault here.

Oh no doubt. I absolutely believe that if you interject in a situation like this you have to be prepared to defend yourself and to be willing to do violence to do so. If you aren't prepared to do so then you are likely to get hurt or killed. I was only speaking for myself when I was responding to him, not anyone else.

Jesus christ, im not blaming the victim. Its not their fault some loser stabbed them. All i asked was why wait until a more dangerous time of the night to grab a bite. In a perfect world, we all should be able to walk the streets at any time, for any reason, but we dont. Shit people will do shit things under the cover of night when its easier to get away with crimes.
