I'd say a 10-year ban is preferable to being escorted out in cuffs for assaulting somebody on live television.

It wouldn't lead to prison time, but it would have been a very different kind of media circus following the slap if there was footage of him being escorted out by police followed by the inevitable mugshot leak to TMZ and the ensuing question of will he won't he in terms of Chris Rock pressing charges.

Does a comedic insult (whether in poor taste or not) warrant assault on live television at an awards show for the world to see?

You are comparing two totally different things at different events decades apart when society accepted things differently. Whatever Jim Carrey did would be received a hell of a lot different today than it was back then, and yes, I think he would be called out and receive blow back for it now.

Leave whataboutism out of this topic. Will Smith fucked up and he deserves the minor consequences he has gotten for this. You can't assault someone on live TV like that, regardless of whether assault may or may not have been accepted decades ago.

She is losing her hair, she just isn't cutting it short. Yeah that is a big thing to some people. And clearly it is an insult . As I said in my post, it isn't on the same level as saying to cancer victim. But it still an insult. And Rock as literally studies how important and have of a sticky issues hair is to black women. Dude that's 100% a whataboutism. You're bringing up an unrelated incident from 1997 to point out that what Will Smith did wasn't that big of a deal. (Although it's funny you complain about that, but Jim Carrey did get slammed on social media when that footage made the rounds again)

Sure, what Will Smith did wasn't the worst thing ever, but that doesn't mean what he did was okay either. There's levels in between that. Don't try to downplay his actions by acting like it's all or nothing

It's something about the staying power of a grown man slapping another man that's interesting & gets people more up in arms. Compared to; remembering what Tom Cruise, Mark Wahlberg, Mel Gibson, Jared Leto, & many others have done that doesn't have anywhere near the same cultural impact, while being objectively worse & still existing in the industry.

It's just the same way that Weinstein was defended for years until it broke the camel's back & it was untenable to maintain that position anymore.

That's true, and he didn't get arrested.

But if you were at a fancy event and you slapped somebody in front of everyone else, and then the people in charge of the event told you that you couldn't come anymore? That's a totally normal thing to happen.

Who cares? He's still free to make movies or do whatever, and he's so rich he could just retire if he wanted to. This is a very minor consequence.

Whataboutism

If you wanna be mad at someone else about someone else go ahead but don't justify assaulting people on stage at the Oscars (or any show) because they made a joke and you're a thin skinned little bitch.

If it was any non millionaire, just any random Joe Q public (including you) you would be in prison right now. It's absolute privilege that it doesn't apply to "the elite"

You're the same as people who defend Donald Trump by going "YEah well whatabout these guys who did unrelated bad things!?"
