there are mods for it! which don't seem to run on current version

and there's supposed to be some complicated workaround with Steam but I can't get it to work

Bedrock Edition probably does but if you're trying to run mods and shit you want to be on Java

but I would've figured there's a mod for controller support too

If you must have controller support there's a program called joy2key that you can use to make a controller map to keyboard inputs. I've used it with other games with no issues.
