Everybody didnt take a turn in Dragon Quest. It was one lone dude killing off a buncha shit in the wild, and plundering stuff from a dead guy named Eldrick.

Man I have beaten 3 Ys now and I am still pretty "it's aight" about the series. It is good but never really blows me away. That being said I haven't played 8 yet and I know everyone says that is the best one so maybe that will change my mind.

VIII is the only one (that I've played) that is anything better than mediocre. Ignore the ever-loving crap out of the rest.

I wish

FF hadnt caught up to the complexity in game design and story until at least FF5, but that still couldnt compare. Squenix also treats the franchise like shit. Nonexistent quality control and continually alienating long time fans. DQ has stayed faithful and consistent from day 1

I really need to catch up on those games.

I played 7 on release and loved it. I've played 1, 4, 8, 11, and a few other spinoffs over the years, and still feel like a newbie.

Final Fantasy came out after Dragon Quest 2, which had a party system.

Yep. Of course they did. Yuji Horii (the main creator of Dragon Quest) went to America and Europe where he played both computer and tabletop RPGs. And he has said that Ultima and Wizardry were his main inspirations. This isn't speculation, he's very open about it.

Dragon Quest was heavily inspired by Wizardry and Ultima.

Ill agree that Dragon Quest is more consistently good than Final Fantasy though. If I was putting the single player series entries head to head:
FF1 > DQ1
DQ2 > FF2
DQ3 > FF3
FF4 > DQ4
DQ5 > FF5
FF6 > DQ6
FF7 > DQ7
DQ8 > FF8
FF9 > DQ9
DQ11 > FFX

But the low points of FF like 2 and 8 really suck, while the low points of DQ are still pretty good.

Ive never been able to get into dragon quest. I understand its importance as a series, but I tried getting into dragon quest 11 after not playing any of them for a while, and it felt so absurdly generic to me.

That was actually a double reference, in the Japanese version of Zelda II is a reference to Loto (Erdrick), then, in Final Fantasy, it was a reference to Link, the american version changed it to Erdrick.

I feel like for me Dragon quest and most early final fantasys are just too generic. Theyre very good at what they do, but I dont find what they do that interesting anymore.

Ive always loved the weirder, often jankier jrpgs like the Baiten Kaitos games, star ocean, and SMT.

If you like jank you'll love it.

Just watch out for the second game. Unless you kill the final boss in three turns it uses an attack that causes a stack overflow and crashes the game. English version only. There's a fan patch to fix it but I have no idea if it's still easily found.
