It's an obsolete Apple format. It was proprietary until nobody cared about it anymore.

oh really, one of the most useless audio formats in your opinion? It was apple , i thought old itunes songs were in mp4 or was it aac?

Yeah it's Apple lossless audio. Stick with FLAC because chrome & firefox have native support for it, no transcoding needed.

Yes, I meant that once Apple no longer considered it a competitive advantage, they published the specification and opened it.

The thing that really sucks is that even though Apple Music has lossless, if you upload an ALAC file in to Apple Music, it gets downconverted for your cloud library and will only be in ALAC for the location you originally uploaded it in.

What do you guys think of wav lossless or even windows media audio lossless? you greatly prefer lossless though? i frequently use mp3 on 320 kbps , the highest option to rip

By virtue of being "lossless", all lossless formats are going to sound exactly the same as each other and the original uncompressed WAV file. The main differences are going to be compression ratios, software support, and whether or not it's an open format (FLAC is best here in these regards)

As for lossy formats, MP3 compression is ancient, the best one to use these days is Opus.
