Imagine going from TTYD combat, which is better than 64's combat in nearly every way, to shallow, gimmicky 2.5D platformer with more dialogue than the previous games combined

I liked Super Paper Mario the most of all the games in the series.

Honestly, it was more that Super wasn't about combat so much, but just slapped light action RPG stuff onto mostly normal platforming.

The real issue was a mixture of two things for me. Not knowing when to stop a joke (like getting stuck doing 30 of the same arena fight before plot cancels your attempt to do more). And the fact that they replaced all the partners with literal squiggles. Only one of which talked.

It was nice to have a playable Bowser though. They need to bring that one back.

TTYD was the last Paper Mario game imo

I mean, it basically did. What we have now is an unrecognizable husk that spasms around occasionally, I guess.

This, really. Super was a bit of a step to the point of almost being a spin-off in how different a direction it went, but there could be some actual merit to a Mario action RPG.

Still had the heart at least. Then SS happened. Thank god for the TTYD remake. Hopefully the game after it will be a true sequel to it.

The series can survive Sticker Star it can survive anything

It killed it for me. TTYD has a home in my top 5 games of all time. Big letdown

It was seen as a side game and people just assumed at the time that a new paper Mario in the style of the first two was coming.

Nah, it killed the Mario and Luigi RPG series in its place...sadly.

i feel like the game shouldn't be boring, but the devs really wanted to add as much backtracking and padding as possible. the game's concept is fine but i think it's just super underbaked

i used to like ttyd a lot when i was younger, but then i got standards and a lot of the flaws get really apparent in subsequent runs. bland level design with tons of backtracking, padding, lackluster move variety, horrendous trouble center and boring pit of trials. it's still a good game but i can't really say it's one of the greats anymore and i have no desire to get the rerelease

Honestly I really liked Super Paper Mario. It's my 2nd favorite after TTYD.

I was annoyed at first because they changed the combat and the companions were those squiggles, but it ended up being a lot of fun. And some of the puzzles made really clever use of the ability to swap between 2D and 3D.
