Who the fuck decided the damage numbers for techs in the original PSO? You have single target techniques that do only 1.5x the damage of ones that hit an entire room, but this isn't some turn based RPG where you get a random encounter or some shit where that number is meaningful. You get constant, multiple waves per room where you're lucky to see as few as three enemies at a time. Once you get past a certain point, it becomes almost meaningless to try to keep using simple techs.

On its own that wouldn't be so bad. "Why would you use Fire 1 when you have Fire 3?" Except you're finding upgrades for those simple techs all the way up to endgame! You get Fire 3.01 when you're on like Fire 1.05, and they both go up to .30 so you're still going further with them the whole time. Sure you might be able to get Fire 1.29 when you're finding Fire 3.24, but the .30 versions are equally rare across all offensive techs. Add on to that how they split up native tech bonuses based on class and why the fuck would you want to use the class that has a 30% bonus to simple techs over the one that has a 30% bonus to advanced ones?! You apply a 30% bonus to the 1.5x damage spell and you wind up at 1.95x damage which means it's still worse when there's as few as two possible targets!

That's not even getting into how horrible the stat balancing is. What the fuck is FOmarl supposed to do compared to FOmar? She's slightly (read: not by any meaningful amount) stronger in some few stats like HP, but he's higher than her in every other stat, and by notable amounts in offensive stats! Then on top of that, her only offensive boost is to Grants. Sure Grants is strong at a glance, but a hefty amount of the most dangerous enemies are completely immune to it! At least FOmar has intermediate techs to fall back on while still getting a bonus.

And that's not even getting into the absurdly useless stat line they built into the caseals. Really wish I could hear someone who worked on that try to explain some of the decisions or of they even looked at overall class balance.

I started looking into my family history on Ancestry and I found out that my great-great grandfather got arrested and sentenced for bigamy a year after he married my great-great grandmother. I found the actual paperwork of his admittance to Sing Sing prison with the 2 different names listed for his two marriages.

I have him in an 1880 census as a 17 year old with his family, so I know for sure that that's his actual family name. It's also not my name.

So he got out of prison and stayed with his second wife and eventually had a bunch of kids, including my great grandfather, still using the alias. So I don't know if he eventually legally changed his name or how any of it worked (like if their marriage was invalidated), but it's looking like my family name was made up.

Yup. The two actually good classes were HUcast (who had over 200 attack over the next highest class) and FOnewm (the only male newman class). Then a little under half were okay/workable based on how you wanted to play (some were good at soloing but not great for parties), and the remainder had no reason to exist, balance wise. HUmar, HUcaseal, RAmar, RAcaseal, FOmarl, and FOnewearl had nothing meaningful they could do better than other, competing classes. The advantages they had were either minor enough they could be ignored, or could be easily compensated for with gear by the time it could attempt to stand out.

Fun fact about me I always hated star wars and Sci fi in general and personally thought light sabers where stupid somehow really liked phantasy star.

But I'm a sucker seeing elves in other settings besides high fantasy and let's face it numans are space elves from a design standpoint. Similarly shadow run got me into the cyberpunk genre for similar reasons. Well I didn't realize at the time robocop sorta fits into the cyberpunk genre
